"Money For Nothing" - Too Hot For Radio!

A song that's been in existence for a quarter-century is suddenly banned from Canadian radio airplay, as the CBSC ruled the Dire Straits song "extremely offensive" due to the song's second verse, which includes a gay slur repeated three times.

They could have just played the edited version like the rock stations have done in the United States, and they might not have had this problem.

Wow! Talk about delayed reaction.

This must mean that there is very little Hip-Hop and no Rap in Canadian radio these days. Those lucky people!

No wonder Canadians are called "Hoseheads"! Is it true that Canadian stations are required to replace "Money For Nothing" with an Anne Murray song everytime it was scheduled to come up in the rotation? "As God as my witness, I thought faggots were people from the country of ***"!

My theory is, at the time, the word "******" wasn't as demeaning in the UK and Canada, but over the years, has become demeaning as a negative epithet, just like the n-word used to negatively refer to blacks.

Care to fill in the blanks?

I honestly do not recall which version 1050 CHUM used to play, but I DO recall Much Music TV playing the music video unedited back in the day! (CHUM and Much Music are also the same company.)

I happened to catch CHEZ today and heard them talking about this. They started playing the Weird Al parody "Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies" and said that from now on they will play the Weird Al version instead. Thats sticking it to the man if you ask me.

Actually, it's called "Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies*" -- according to Weird Al, the lawyers required the song to be called as such, but they refused to explain what the asterisk stood for.

This whole thing is BS.. look at the commotion caused by ONE SINGLE COMPLAINT!

It's not right. One person complains, then a board of 6 people decide this song is no longer acceptable after all this time.

The CBSC says the word "has evolved to become unacceptable" ...

No it hasn't! It's become more acceptable and has less of a homosexual connotation than ever..

Also the chair of the board works for a competing radio company in the same market as CHOZ-FM. Hmmm....

A survey on CBC.ca showed that 95% of voters thought that the song should NOT be banned. Thank you Canadians for proving that this decision is not that of the community.

No censorship!!

If I were a DJ on CHEZ I'd say "This one's for the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council" before playing the Weird Al song, a la how CKLW jocks used to (supposedly) say "This one's for the CRTC".

What is the point of the CBSC anyway? I don't get why they exist. The CRTC controls the licences.. Can someone enlighten me a little?

Let's put it this way. If you have an opinion on something, but your friends all disagree, you can quietly complain to the CBSC, (regarding your opinion) and if they AGREE with you, you suddenly have some new friends to back you up. ;D ;)

So, if YOU say "What is that crap! language like that!" and all your friends say "Relax! It's just a song already!"
Just go to the CBSC with your complaint, and suddenly you get your wish. :D

K-97 Edmonton is playing Money For Nothing for an hour straight on Friday.

The CBSC is "voluntary" (the meaning of the quotes will be explained in a second).  If you are a member you *must* abide by all their rulings.  This includes not playing music or saying words they have found objectionable and broadcasting any rulings made against you if they decide you did something bad.  If you don't play along you get kicked out.  Of course, the kicker is that many stations are required by the CRTC to be CBSC members as a condition of their license.  If they get kicked out of the CBSC they could lose their license...which means the CBSC has much more power than just being a self-enforcing "voluntary" body.

Of course, K-97 may not have that condition on their license and thus may not care if they get kicked out of the CBSC or they may not be CBSC members at all right now.  That is likely the reason they're able to pull that stunt off.

Some rock stations actually played the unedited version for years.
