MONICA'S RETIREMENT

With Channel 2's Monica Pearson retirng today after 37 years at WSB i am confused over what is next for the anchor lineup. It was originally announced at the time that Monica's 4 & 6 pm replacement would happen in September and that Jovita would add those duties July 26th until the permanent announcement. I see on wikipedia that Linda Stouffer would take on the 4 & 6pm co-anchor roles July 26th. With this being Atlanta i do not know how WSB plans on getting by with 2 white news anchors at 4 & 6pm. Jovita has been groomed to be the lead female anchor at WSB for years and she toured with Monica during radio interviews yesterday. If Jovita and Justin are to be the main anchor team maybe they should do the 6 & 11 and others handle the 4 & 5pm shows. Maybe the testing of Linda and Fred means Fred might be doing the 4 & 6pm shows with Linda leaving Jovita and Justin at 5 & 11pm.

They have shoved this "Monica retirement" stuff down our throats for weeks now and I am tired of it. I have been checking out the competition and like what some of the others are offering. I may not be back.

I've grown up watching Monica on Channel 2 and she will be missed :'( . No offense, but Brenda Wood(WXIA) and Amanda Davis(WAGA) are to stiff to me. The only other anchor in Atlanta that reminds me of the Monica Kaufman connection would have to be Jaquitta Williams at CBS Atlanta. One would think Justin Farmer and Jovita Moore would be the "new generation" at Channel 2 News at 5, 6 and 11.

Monica had weird hair, which made it hard to look at her. Her retirement is probably a good thing.

Upstate29651, some of your past comments about non-white news anchors in Atlanta can be connotated as "weird". I wouldn't be so quick to use that terminology or even train of thought...

On topic: The final newscast for Monica was good, but they did drag it out. I feel that she retired on top which we can't say the same for Sue Simmons whom retired from WNBC last month after being forced out.

All I know is that Monica looked INCREDIBLE for her final broadcast! She has been an asset to this city for her entire career. As an Atlanta native, I've never really known a WSB-TV without her. I wish her the best of luck and all happiness in her retirement.

There are so many things that I love about Monica. Here are a couple:

  • The blank look some new reporter is giving the camera when broadcasting live from a remote and Monica asks, "ins't that two streets over from what used to be Ashby St.?"
  • Glenn Burns is showing us a tower cam in Cobb County where a tornado is forming. Glenn keeps referring to the bottom of the picture where there is a circular motion. This was in the day when WSB had about a third of lower screen in graphics all the time. The graphics were covering up the part of the screen that Glenn keeps referring to over and over. Finally, Monica, whose mic is not on, screams across the studio, "Will someone turn off that graphic so we can see what Glenn is talking about!!!"

It appears that Wikipedia was wrong. Imagine that.

Jovita has been doing the 4pm and 6pm newscasts.

What an exciting yet stressful time this must be for her. She's now the lead female anchor on the #1 news station in a Top 10 market. But she lost her million-dollar home to foreclosure last year and is in the midst of a messy divorce with the aide of Randall Kessler.

How does that song go: "you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have..."
