Monikers Providence may never get!

People talk about Providence getting a Star, Jack, Mike, Alice etc..... But just remember that it may never happen. Providence has never had a "KISS"... so it may not ever get the other ones either. Providence actually seems like a market that creates it's own Monikers (or) at the very least just uses much less popular ones like Hot, Kix or B. Is there another "Coast" station anywhere else in the country or is it unique to Providence?

It's a weird town we live in where anything could happen... but frequently Nothing ever does.

Other than KOST 103.5 in Los Angeles, which hasn't used the monkier in years, WSNE is the only one.

Coast 93.3, I believe, was just a quick fix to get out of the "The New 93.3" disaster. CC couldn't use Star, which is actually a CC monkier (the late Star 104.5/Philadelphia, there are a few more), they couldn't use Lite FM (94.9 Lite FM/Atlanta, 106.7 Lite FM/New York, 99.3 Lite FM/Orange County, NY), they can't use Mix (Mix 93.1/Springfield, the late Mix 95.9/Orange County, CA, Mix 100.5/Rochester). After running out of brandings because of WQSX, WWLI, and WBMX, they had to come up with something unique.

Umm, have you ever heard KOST? It's always written as "KOST 103.5" but on the air it's called "Coast 103.5", never "K-O-S-T" except for the top of hour.

Has KOST ever called itself K-O-S-T? I recall listening online quite a while back and hearing the station use it's call letters. Perhaps my memory is just fuzzy.

Dude! Remember the days of when they were called "93-3 SNE" around 1996? They had these great sounding custom jingles (I think SFX was the owner then). Sounded very hot! :) I personally would like them to use the call letters again and be proud to be "93-3 SNE" which *is* unique; Southern New England! Hey, there still are Hot AC's using there call too; 104.5 XLO, 96-5 TIC, 95-5 PLJ ;)

Anyway, another reason Providence doesn't have those generic names such as Mix and Kiss-FM is also because Providence overlaps with Boston. Even though there could be a Kiss-FM owned by CC in Providence because they own the one in Boston, I believe the reason is the overlaping signals between the two markets and ratings confusion (erronous diary entries).

Hey, not a bad thing! Providence gets (SOME) creativity that way ;)
______________

I did a quick google & found coast.fm in South Florida, kozt.fm in Mendocino, 987thecoast.com in Cape May. There seem to be a few Australian statons using Coast too.

"HOT" is a popular moniker.

Hip-Hop Stations:

Hot 97 in NYC
Hot 97.7 in Boston
Hot 93.7 in Hartford

CHR
Hot 99.5 in DC

And I know there are more.
______________

I lived in Wilmington, NC about 5 years ago and definitely recall a "Coast" station at the time. I vaguely recall it being sort of a Top 40/Kasey Kasem type of station. So I just Yahoo'd and found a www.coast973.com which is WMNX which bills itself as "#1 for Blazin' Hip-Hop and R&B". That is definitely not the Coast that I remember.

No other Coasts but I did find the following coastal/watery/beachy stations (and I apologize to any current NC people who may have wanted to respond):

980WAAV, "The Wave", WAAV-AM, News/Sports/Talk station

Surf 98.3, WSFM, Rock Alternative

The Shark (close enough to the subject, I figured), WERX 102.5 FM

Beach 104, WCXL, 104.1 FM

Oldies and Beach 105.7FM, WGQR

77BigWaves, WLWL-AM

Coast 97.3 has been R&B/Rap for as long as I can remember, so maybe you were remembering another station.

Even "waterier" is "Water Country 94.5" in Manteo, NC :)

As for "Coast" though, Triple A "93.7 The Coast" existed for about 12 years in Norfolk until the company pulled the plug on it December 2003. There's 97.3 The Coast in South Florida, and Coast 92.5 in Charleston. There's probably a few more I'm missing or forgetting... so definately, there are a lot more around the country than 93.3 and KOST.
______________

There was another "Beach" on Long Island (until very recent). 101.7 WBEA Southold, NY. It was "Beach Radio 101.7" as Hot AC until 1/1/04, then it became "Beach 101.7" as CHR/Mainstream. Then 11/8/04 it became "Blaze 101.7" as CHR/Rhythmic (aka Hip Hop/R&B).
______________

I always thought about Providence having a "KISS" station. Of course MA has one with KISS in Boston and KISS 95.7 in Connecticut, I think it would be interesting to build a state of the art KISS station in one of the nice buildings in downtown Providence. It could be as nice as KISS 102.7 in LA. Anyways, just a thought.

I just had a good laugh. I started reading the first post and wondered who started this piece of crap thread. Then two lines into it I realized it was me who started it two years ago! Thanks for dragging this one out of the closet. lol.

Seriously though I do have one new thing to add. A friend of mine says there is now a "COAST" in the Fort Walton Beach Florida area.

Here are some more>
The Coast 93.1 WMGX Portland Maine Hot AC
Coast 102 WGCM-FM GULFPORT, MS Classic Hits
96.7 The Coast WCTZ Stamford Connecticut Classic Hits
97.3 The Coast WFLC Miami Florida Hot AC
98.7 The Coast WCZT Avalon New Jersey Hot AC
100.9 The Coast WMJK Sandusky Ohio Classic Rock
The Coast KOZT KOZT Mendocino County California AAA

Lets not forget Ocean 104, or Ocean 104.7 down the cape...
