MONKEE, DAVY JONES DIES OF HEART ATTACK AT 66

News as sad as it is ironic; Jones appealed to Monkee's TV show fans as the baby-faced, ever vulnerable child, and maternally minded women just ate it up.

His appeal lapped over at least one whole generation. I recently shared a laugh with my daughter, who turned 30 this month. She remember's a conversation she and I had in 1987, when she asked if we could move close to where Davy Jones lives. She was referring of course to his popularity on the re-release by MTV of the Monkee's TV show.

What a shame. I just watched 60s Pop, Rock & Soul, which was hosted by him on PBS the othernight (he also performed). I think that was taped just a few months ago, so it might've been his last TV performance.

One famous story is that the success of The Monkees and fame of Davy Jones caused a British rock singer David Jones to change his last name to Bowie.

There is a girl here in Phoenix who was, years ago, very sick. Every time Davey Jones came to town he would make a special visit with her. I don't remember her name or whether she is still alive but would imagine that she, of all people outside his immediate family, is devastated by his untimely death.

Another memory of Jones-- he seemed to dodge the bullet, as the other three meshed themselves into that infamous controversy over "control". Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and especially Michael Nesmith all clashed with producer Don Kirschner over content, insisting on freedom to contribute to the TV show's music, along with the right to perform off-camera in concerts. Kirschner would not lighten his grip, steadfastly refusing to fix something he didn't view as broken; the show after all had been a smash success.

Jones was reportedly the only actual vocalist performing on Little Bit Me, Little Bit You. The other three were no-shows, leaving Jones to sing solo. The ensuing success of that number was due largely to clever studio trickery. One trade rumor circulating at the time had the background vocals performed by Neil Diamond and Carol King, uncredited. Both were under contract to competing record labels.

MTV's silence is another irony. Jones' bandmate Michael Nesmith created the programming format of segwaying videos and live television. That project became the early day prototype for MTV. Nesmith honed this idea at his then newly formed Pacific Arts Studios, with money from a generous inheritance from his mother, the inventor of liquid paper, or, as we came to know it, White Out.

Yes Me-TV will roll out the Monkees marathon. They already air for a couple hours on Sunday
afternoon.

This makes 4 deaths in a row for Me-TV (Anne Francis, James Arness, Harry Morgan).........nobody on
Antenna TV seems to be dying these days.

Well, the "it was Saturday night and they were on autopilot and all the regular fulltime weekday "news" people who might have otherwise covered this breaking news event were not there" excuse is not available for them this time, is it? ::)

Antenna TV shows The Monkees over the weekends though. ???
At least they do in Los Angeles. It's in the Gidget/Flying Nun/Monkees/Partridge Family block.

I went to the ME-TV website. There wasn't any mention of a Monkees marathon. As far as I know, they do not have the rights to The Monkees and I don't see any mention of them on their schedule. There was a picture of Davy Jones on their website, however.

The only conceivable thing ME-TV has to air with Davy Jones is The Brady Bunch episode when biggest fan Marcia tries to get him to show up at her prom.

How about it being wholly irrelevant to the audience?

So that's why Facebook screwed the pooch on my "news feed" yesterday ["your friends are talking about David Bowie"]...

At least Micky, Mike, and Peter (who just turned 70 IIRC) are still with us.

The Monkees are now the opposite of the Mamas and Papas (their chart careers roughly paralleled each other [AND the run of Batman :)]). IOW, 3/4 of the Monkees are still with us, while Michelle is all that's left of the M's and P's.

RIP, Davy. BTW I vaguely remember watching The Monkees on the Peacock as a 6yo during the last years of my parents' marriage.
