Monmouth/Ocean Blackout

What blackout?

I'm on Long Beach Island in Ocean County and I was here all day yesterday and didn't even hear of a blackout until I read your post!

Well in LBI you probably JUST missed it.
I believe it started about 5:29 PM on Tuesday 12/9/08, and coincidentally in the middle of the woods behind Press Comm's studio in Neptune is where the substation transformer exploded.

I was inside and noticed the lights flicker, generator kicked on, there where several staff members outside at the time and they where overwhelmed by the large flash, 150 ft fireball and mushroom cloud as the transformer exploded.

There are lots of news articles about it, here's one: http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200881210010

As far as stations, the Long Branch transmitter for 107.1 was without power so I switched on a local backup and WHTG-AM was without power til about 10 PM.

Manahawkin, home of WKMK, WCHR-FM, WNJM and WVBH
Along with LBI, home of WBHX

are powered by Atlantic City Electric Company, NOT JCP&L, so that's probably why most of Ocean County was unaffected...
