Monmouth-Ocean Ratings 06-08/2011

Looks like B 98.5 is carving out a niche for itself, and might actually be able to stay afloat in this market. Press clearly has the passion to make this format work, because they're actually promoting it, which they completely failed to do with G Rock.

105.7 The Hawk is still underachieving given that strong signal of theirs. I still think they should lose the cornball animal mascot and go Active Rock/Alternative to fill a void and reach a broader audience.

WJRZ is a lost cause. If this is the best they can do after two years, it's really time for them to drop this stinker of a format. Either Classic Hits, a "Gen-X" format, or a mix of local & syndicated talk (I'm pulling for the latter - the NYC & Philly AM stations don't reach much of the area) would have to provide an improvement over what they're doing now.

Don't know what happened, but it looks like the RAT has just kicked major butt over the last four months and left the HAWK in the dust.
Especially with WIP going FM, and ESPN in South Jersey in FM, TownSquare should just change 105.7 over to Fox Sports Radio like their predecesors tried on the lower range AM side a few years ago[1310AM]. Would work since they already carry the HS sports for the Jersey Shore plus the Jets games.

I am not too sure that Fox sports really works. Its bringing in no money at WWTX in Wilmington. With WIP AM/FM and WPEN AM/FM, Fox is not going to be that attractive to listeners and ad buyers.

If Townsquare flipped 105.7 to Fox Sports Radio, they might as well add Blue Claws' baseball. MiLB wouldn't overlap the Jets or HS sports, since the season is over by Labor Day. Blue Claws' playoff games that overlap a September Jets' game could go to 1160 AM. Rutgers football and men's b-ball would be a good fit as well, since WOR is questionable south of Exit 91 on the GSP.

BTW, does Townsquare own 97.3 ESPN-FM? :)

WWTX is owned by ClearChannel, which operates Fox Sports Radio. They have a signal[1290] similar to that of WADB[1310] here on the Jersey Shore [only a thirty mile radius from Wilmington] so money to them is not a major factor down there. A lot of the ad sales down there are in bulk spread out to all the CC stations in Delaware[Not many other stations in Delaware other than the CC owned stations]. 1290 has started to branch out, though, by picking up both Ravens and Orioles games last year in order to try to generate some revenue.

Now, as for your other point, FSR would be a different alternative than the other options. WIP is only geared to Philly fans. WFAN is geared to NY fans. 1050, 97.5[950am], and 97.3 are all ESPN related programming. If you can gear FSR programming with the local Jersey Shore sports, like BlueClaws games, Monmouth University sports, and Jets games, you might be able to get a better rating in Monmouth and Ocean counties than those of ESPN Radio affiliates or WIP. Will not reach WFAN ratings on the Jersey SHore, but could gain a nice foothold with a better signal from 105.7 than it ever could from 1310 in the past.

1. You could be a program director ;), although I think Monmouth University would probably play better than Rutgers. Besides, Rutgers has some games on 97.5. There is the Spring and Summer programming right there with the Claws.

2. Yes, Townsquare owns 97.3 as well as 105.7.

Maybe I could've been a PD, but that's a seat-of-your-pants life! Rutgers has football games on 97.5, but it barely reaches the Shore area and is geared toward Philly. Rutgers football and men's b-ball is good fall and winter programming. Again, WOR's signal is OK in Ocean County by day but questionable at night when most of the b-ball games are played. WOR is almost unlistenable at night south of Exit 91 on the GSP, though it easily blankets north and central NJ.

If FSR is too west coast oriented, than Townsquare could easily go with ESPN on 105.7, basically making it a simulcast with 97.3. The two stations would have separate local programming between 1 PM and 7 PM before rejoining ESPN. The only other differnces between 97.3 and 105.7 would be local team broadcasts and branding. 97.3 goes with "97.3 ESPN-FM South Jersey", while 105.7 could be "105.7 ESPN-FM Jersey Shore".

I'm not a PD but that plan might be cost effective! :)

The RAT is basically the only commercial rock station in the jersey coast until MGM tweaked. Not to mention their "Rat Rock Girl" contest is really doing well from what I am seeing.
