Monmouth-Ocean Ratings

Or whatever is left of. But we all know how WOBM, WJLK, and WCHR are doing.

WOBM is probably beating The Breeze now. The decision to go for a narrower playlist and start playing the music that can be heard ad nauseum elsewhere (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, etc.) has clearly backfired. Below a 3 is simply unacceptable for a station with its broad reach - it's time for a revamp (not playing any post-2000 music, for instance), if not a complete format change.

WBBO & WJRZ continue to pull anemic ratings. There are a ridiculous amount of formats that are not available in all or most of the market (News/Talk is the most obvious, but there's also Alternative, Variety Hits, Smooth Jazz, anything Rhythmic (classic or current), etc. I'd really like to understand the reluctance of Press & GM to drop formats that are clearly never going to improve on their current positions. As WOBM and WKMK (back when it was on 98.5) have proven, you can do well with a signal that almost exclusively serves only Ocean County, as long as it's with the right format. It is seriously time for a change for both of them - I don't see how either station could possibly be profitable at this point with those low audiences.

Of course, no ratings for WBNJ being a non-comm, but I know it has a very strong following with its mix of Big Band & Oldies, and it has a surprisingly good signal that can be heard in the majority of Ocean Co. The station essentially fills what would have been two notable format holes, and I think it does a good job at both with an expansive catalog of music.

Wow, the Breeze seems to be killing itself with the music adjustment it made last year. IIRC, it was trying to appeal to a younger audience, and I wonder if the demo breakouts show any improvement there? What is clear is that they changes they made chased a lot of the long established audience away, and that's usually not a way to run a successful business in a competitive local market.

Are ad sales at the shore really that demo driven that such massive music surgery was necessary? After all, it's not a major PPM market with a lot of big national ad buys.

Has anyone seen demo breakouts? I know I am stating the obvious, but if not, all of these analyses could very well be inaccurate.

How is it during the SUMMER that the CHR manages to go DOWN??

And WHTG-AM, with 500 watts, manages to pull a .5...imagine what it could get on a FM signal like 98.5 or 99.7.

And the beat goes on...

During the summer, from what I seen, 92.3 was pretty much the only CHR all over Monmouth & Ocean venues, whereas B98.5 was only in Seaside and Six Flags. Not to mention, the CHR overkill that's on where Monmouth/Ocean residents stuck with the NYC/Philly stations for years already.

As for WHTG-AM, I can't understand why they haven't done a simulcast yet.

Aaaaaaand recent numbers are up for Aug-Sep-Oct.

The Breeze did indeed revamp their playlist recently: they're now focusing mostly on '70s and '80s music (plus a handful of '60s songs like "Brown Eyed Girl"), with a much more limited selection of '90s and '00s music than before. They also have new jingles and new liners that say "'70s, '80s, '90s and Today". So basically they went back to the previous music format they had before the failed decision to become a cookie-cutter AC station.

Bob McAllen must have had the biggest s#it eating grin on his face...he threw a fit when sales & the GM pushed the new format on the station (along with gutting the newscasts).

At least they admitted they messed up and reverted back - was wondering why I heard "Use Ta Be My Girl" when was scanning the dial.
