Monterey Bay CHRs?

97.9 FM is flipping to sports. I know it was once a CHR but cities such as Fresno & Monterey Bay lack CHRs? Whose likely going to flip to Top 40?

KYZZ-FM changing formats again? And to sports? Buckley already has ESPN on their AM 630 KIDD. What a shame since 97.9 sounded pretty good with their classic hits presentation; the only problem with that frequency is the signal. Its great in the Salinas Valley but on the Monterey Peninsula its not too good. 97.9 has been through so many format changes; from Spanish to CHR to Classic Hits back to CHR (Exa) under Wolfhouse then sold to Buckley which brought it back to CHR then to Classic Hits and now Sports. By the way, none of those formats lasted very long.

Who is likely to flip to Top 40? The closest thing we have to CHR is Mapleton's KCDU-FM 101.7 The Beach. Pretty much a CHR/Mainstream presentation.

Doesn't Monterey Bay have KDON? How many CHR's do they need?

Fresno doesn't lack CHRs, KSEQ 97.1, KWYE 101.1, KBOS 94.9, KABX 97.5, and KALZ 96.7, I think were covered.

Whoops! I forgot about KDON seeing as though I worked there from 1997-2000 lol. We do have two CHR's here on the Monterey Peninsula but I do feel that 'CDU 101.7 the better sounding of the two IMHO.

Every visit to California I am struck by the proliferation of CHR/Dance sounding stations. I suspect that much of it is a reflection of the ethnification of the state.

The heaviest music radio usage is among females. There are many homes with three generations of women residing, sometimes four. Grandma still likes the beat. If the delivery of the music is in keeping with what she grew up with in the 60s and 70s (which it is is) she'll listen, too. Today's CHR music is very appealling to older females, too. That helps. My point is size of household matters and there are so many more large HHs in California.

And the stations are very good. Perhaps most important is they work for advertisers. They deliver a big audience and when bought/sold properly they get results.

Plus, the KGOs, KFBKs, KNXs, KFREs are losing ground so the only real buy is a music station.

I think people in California just know how to have a good time. :)
