Re: Montgomery book + Is Kenny J out?

I heard a rumor earlier this evening that Hallelujah PD Kenny J walked away from the job today. I know he just returned to the station from being on vacation. Is any of this true? There was a great write up on him and the station in this week's edition of R&R Magazine....

I would be real interested to hear what the real numbers say...the $$$ numbers. Also, who's number 1 in the mornings in the 25-54 demo? Hopefully someone could enlighten me.

On the 12+ I am suprised to see WLWI increase with all the changes they have made on the air in the past 12 months. I am even more suprised to see Magic leap frog over Hot...all of a sudden Hot 105.7 is the red headed step child over there, the lowest rated of the three.

I really don't understand why WACV is ranked higher than WLWI-AM (even though we are just looking at 12+)...between Ramsey, Rush, and Hannity they should have the #1 talk station. The only weakness I see at WLWI-AM is the morning show and possibly lack of promotion and production? It's bad when a translator is tied with your local station.

SATURDAY 12+ AQH

1. WHLW-FM 15.5
2. WWMG-FM 9.5
3. WZHT-FM 8.4

Did you get to check out your specific ratings for the time period you are on versus syndicated programming later in the day on ACV? Just curious.

b5,

No, but I'll pass it along when I find out. We're under a bomb threat at the middle school I teach in and I just came in from the 105-degree heat at the football field!

Back in my days in the Montgomery Public School systems...this sounds bad, but it wasn't a good bomb threat unless we got out of class for more than an hour. Of course compared to being outside right now, I would actually want to go to class.

9 times out of 10, its a kid that attends that school...if the phone records don't say who it was (used a public phone) than he will tell someone, who will tell someone else, and he'll end up expelled in the next 2 weeks.

There goes two topics for your show Saturday...the oppresive heat, and school discipline (discussion on what punishments kids should expect for their actions, plus what makes them act that way..that will get the phones ringing)

Who is WSTH? I thought that cheap channel only had 3 stations in that market.

WSTH is "Rooster 106" out of Columbus, GA. That's where Bear O'Brian was before he returned to Montgomery and Bama Country 98.9.

106.1's COL is Alex City. I think their tower is north of Opelika .... they put a decent signal into Montgomery, and one can also hear it in Troy.

A bomb scare in TALLASSEE?? Damn.... (Ya gotta keep those Capitol Heights kids out of there). ;D

What else it there to do in Tallassee?!

Rooster could probably be rated better in Montgomery, but they are smart to concentrate all their effort on one city. If they started trying to sell all these other cities, then they could lose their core audience. They should be very happy with their 12+ in Montgomery and leave it at that. The little audience they get here in Montgomery, adds extra exposure for the Columbus, GA businesses that advertise with them.

What do you mean, what is there to do in Tallassee? You can listen to WACQ or WTLS and forget about making threats! ;) It wasn't for real, anyway - just some kid who probably didn't want to take a test or something.

The earlier post was truncated, but WACV's Saturday looked good. We had a 2.7, up from 0.3 in the last ratings period. At least this time around, some people were listening and wrote it down. Greg Budell, Don Markwell, and Leslie Bailey also should be proud .. they did extremely well.

Russell - did you see that WTBF made it into the Dothan book? Nice increase on the 12+. Last go 'round, WTBF didn't even register on the chart. It was good to see that they made it. And now, Troy will become much more interesting if Al Stroh's new station competes directly with the Big 'T' -- what happens next will surely be worth watching (and, well, listening to).

Maybe I missed it, but is there any word on what format Stroh is going to put on that new FM station of his?

No, I didn't know that. But with the changing-of-the-CE-guard down there, isn't 94.7 back to full power? That should've helped.

And what about 99.9 in Tallassee? I just discovered that one last Sunday after dropping off my kid in Eclectic. I don't remember the last time I ever heard "Freedom Rider" by Traffic on the radio (not counting the time or two I played it on my old 'TBF CR show). That and a lot of other esoteric rock. Obviously no soccer moms in the auditorium test audience at "99.9 The Rock." :) They ID'd as "Tallassee/Auburn", although they were beginning to seriously break up at about Tiger Town on I-85. Very interesting station. Last I remembered, they were doing "Pure Gold" like WTBF-FM used to do.

I actually spoke with Mr. Stroh a while back -- and he didn't say what the format would be. He told The Montgomery Advertiser it might be FM talk, oldies, or a Spanish station. WTBF is affiliated with the "soft relaxing favorites" from ABC Radio Networks, so there are already oldies around the airwaves of the Wiregrass.

In the Dothan book, WTBF-FM went from 0.4 to 1.1, for 20th place out of 28 stations.

WQNR-FM 99.9, "Tallassee/Auburn", is no longer owned by Fred Randall Hughey, I don't believe. I've heard them playing some old school AOR playlists, but I don't know where the studios are or anything. Fred Randall's main interest right now is WACQ-AM 1130 in Tallassee. But when I was talking with him last spring, he said something about increasing the signal power of that station -- which would make things interesting in the Montgomery market, too, because WACQ is a full-time oldies station -- from ABC Radio Networks!

On The Greg Show just now, Rad Dodson pulled up the numbers for some of the other talk shows, so this must be public information. Leslie Bailey had a 1.5 in the mornings, against Kevin Elkins with 0.9. In the afternoons, Greg Budell had a 4.5 in the 12+ and 8.3 in the 25-54 demo, which put him in 3rd place - behind Hallelujah and I-92, tied with Hot 105 between 3p-6p! He even beat Paul Finebaum's show!

I know I'm just the night and weekend guy, but as someone who grew up drooling over Montgomery radio, it sure is nice to see 1170 doing so well in this day and age. I'm an unabashed fan of Greg, Don, and Leslie on our station - they are pros at what they do. I grew up listening to Leslie (with Larry Stevens and Rusty Aldridge on WHHY), so knowing that she did so well is great news, and I can continue the crush I've had on her since I was, like, 5 years old. And no one has stirred the pot more than Greg Budell since Mark Thompson was here 25 years ago. These are happy times.

WQNR is owned by Tom Hayley who also owns WAUD and WTRP in LaGrange, where I hide out for high school football. The studio in in Auburn right off Exit 51 at I-85.

LaGrange Radio, good to hear from you again.

Give me a holler about football stuff when you get the chance. I'd like to hear how you guys are putting it together over there on Friday nights . . .

You are assuming I have it "together" to start with? ::)

I'll give you a call Saturday afternoon/evening.
