Montreal Radio

Lived in MOntreal for a while, all I have to say about Montreal radio is there isn't a lot of variety of formats. Only 3 different types of French format out there in Montreal, (French AC, CHR, & News/Talk) nothing else like Paris or Brussels where there is more than 3 music format. Why doesn't Montreal provide more radio format such as, Urban/Country/Rock/Classic Rock/Alternative or Dance?

This is mainly because Montreal is very bilingual. There is not enough "Francophone" population to justify an all french format outside of those three. (at this time...)

Hmmm this is surprising. I am from the USA and have been madly in love with Montreal for about 4 years now. I would like to move there eventually. One of the reasons I want to move is the dance music scene is unlike anything I've ever seen in the USA. Clubs like RedLight and Stereo frequently host world-class house and trance DJ's like Deep Dish, DJ Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Sander Kleinenburg, and Paul Oakenfold. Stereo is even owned by David Morales, remixer of many hot tracks from the likes of Madonna and Mariah Carey.

The massive annual dance parties like Bal en Blanc and Black & Blue with attendance figures of 15,000+ people certainly show there is a market for such music. Black & Blue has been going strong for 16 years, and has become so large that it's now held in the Olympic Stadium. This year Bal en Blanc was sold out weeks before the party, and hundreds of people were turned away at the door late into the morning because very few people were leaving early, as is usually the case.

So... That being said, I wonder if the dance music is mostly on the anglophonic stations? To be honest, it's hard for me to tell when I am there because I am out enjoying the city, the nightlife, riding my bike on Jean-Drapeau, or hanging out at my buddy's swimming pool downtown. 8)

Take a serious look at your choice of music.
Now try to enjoy it the same with 35-40% Can Con.
Is it still as enjoyable?
Radio stations in Canada must play 35-40% can con, this is why there *may be* a shortage of your taste in music on the radio dial in Canada.

That might also explain why there is no longer an "Energy 108" in Toronto either.

No.
Corus ran energy 108 and messed things up big time when they chose to go coast to coast with their energy programming.

Going back further, it may be a better point to agree that the old Dance 108 couldn't handle the can con regs.

Ahhh yes, I forget the CC laws. You are correct, it would be very difficult. Now that I think about it, this would also probably explain why so many Canadian stations have sleepy stuff on during the day, and funktabulous stuff on at night. It seems like every station I've found in Toronto that has electronica at night has something else during the day - like asian or indian community programming. Then there was CBC2 - classical during the day, and Brave New Waves at night. I cross myself and shed a tear for that one - is nothing sacred any more?

Don't forget the death of CFNY in 1992... Or at least, the CFNY of the Dave Marsden era... I cross myself twice and shed a two extra tears on that one... :-(

Hmmm... I feel like singing... "If I had a million dollars...I'd buy CFN-YYYYYYYYYYYYY"...

It'll cost alot more than that to buy Toronto's CFNY because Corus would want to sell 640 with it...oh, right...640 isn't doing all that well...never mind. :D

I'm surprised there's no "Hockey 640" thread started up yet.
They went all hockey as of today, from what I understand...

Well that was a million 1992 dollars... Now it would be like 62 million... :)
