Montreal Radio

I can tell you that Montreal radio scene is so boring compare to Vancouver and Toronto. As a multilingual person, I can understand French, and English. However, I find that Montreal only has 3 (FM) commercial English radio stations which doesn't have lots of formats to choose from. As for the French side of the dial, there should be more formats than having 2 AC's and 2 CHR's and a boring FM Talk station.

Montreal ENglish: CFQR 92.5 - AC, CJFM 95.9 - HOT AC, CHOM 97.7 CLassic Rock.
MOntreal French: CKMF 94.3 - French CHR, CKOI 96.9 - French CHR, CFGL - 105.7 French AC, CITE 107.3 - French AC, CHMP 98.5 French News/Talk, 91.9 CKLX - Jazz

Also, for the English listeners, are there any American stations still targeting Montreal as if they were a Montreal station?
Or have they gone back to targeting their home American towns/markets?

??? I think there's a YES FM or a Hits FM or something behaving as if it's a Montreal station even though it's really on American soil.
Good for them if they can continue to get away with it. No CRTC rules, just FCC regs.
Therefore, no Can Con regs etc. & therefore more freedom to play American hits without being forced to play 35-40% can con.

That would be WYUL 94.7 from Chateaugay, NY. It's a fringe signal at best to Montreal, even in the west end where the Anglos are.

The CRTC can't do a thing about it, though Canadian businesses asdvertising on WYUL won't get the same tax benefits as those that advertise on Canadian stations.

And of course, WYUL has something no Canadian station has -- EAS tests, focused on Franklin County. Irrelevant to Montreal, but still the law.

Ok here's a list of all the Montreal area radio stations:

http://www.highwayhome.com/travel/tourismbycity/montreal/montrealradio.html

Is it up to date and accurate?

It's missing a few stations and has one listed that never made it to air. CKZW 650 had their license denied and only operates on 1650 when radio shalom, CJRS ceases programming on Friday nights and all day Saturday. Speaking of CJRS it's not listed and neither is CHOU 1450, wihch is an Arabic Language station. It also still lists CINF and CINW, both of which I wish were still on.

Montreal certainly has to be more exciting than Ottawa. :p With more Americans on the fringe (including VPR, which comes in like a local), plus the 24/7 jazz and classical stations, also a few ethnic stations thrown into the mix, Montreal actually has some rather interesting choices. It could give Toronto a run for the money, but...Vancouver? What's so interesting on the dial in Vancouver?

More words of wisdom from the Centre Of The Universe.

I'm not from Toronto. ;)

Having said that, Vancouver's ethnic stations are rather cool, of course there's Co-op Radio and CITR, but is there anything else interesting on the dial? Does Vancouver have either a 24/7 jazz or classical station? Any real musical alternative to the usual commercial radio?

Oh! Another thing, when I was in Montreal. My ipod nano skip from 100.7 to 105.7 FM then 107.3 FM. Are the radio stations between 100.7FM and 105.7FM tend to be very weak? I don't get why there isn't any commercial radio stations between 100.7 and 105.7FM?

Between 100.7 and 105.7 there's also CIBL 101.5, CINQ 102.3 and CKDG 105.1, plus CHAA 103.3 from Longueuil. Between 105.7 and 107.3 there's the newly-launched CKIN at 106.3.

All these stations are low-powered community stations broadcasting at lower power than the commercial and CBC stations -- CINQ is the strongest of the bunch, at 2.3 kw.

Should Montreal have added more English Commercial radio stations than it currently has? Montreal only has 3 FM Commercial radio stations (92.5 THE Q [AC], VIRGIN 96 [HOT-AC] CHOM 97.7 [Classic Rock]? How about CHR-Pop, CHR-Rhythmic, Rock, Alternative, or Country? I wouldn't count 94.7 HITS-FM, Wild Country 96.5, 99.9 THE BUZZ, or STAR 92.9 because they don't serve the entire island and it's hard to hear these station clearly especially 94.7 HITS-FM and Wild Country 96.5.

Just to be statistical about it, no... The proportion of stations broadcasting in English is considerably higher than the proportion of residents who speak English as their first language.

According to Statistics Canada, 13% of the population of Greater Montreal speaks English as their first language. Of the market's 31 radio stations, ten -- 32% -- broadcast in English. Not counting three multilingual stations that broadcast some programs in English.
