MOntreal TV

I know Montreal is bilingual with 40% of the population can understand English. Can Montreal support another English TV channel? I know Montreal only has 3 1/2 English TV channel, the 1/2 is CH which is a multilingual TV channel.

Probably not

Most of Quebec's anglophones live on Montreal Island. A 4th English station would never make it as there would be very little audience beyond Montreal.

Ok, but now, since Toronto one is no longer "Toronto" and there seems to be less and less "Toronto" about it, (Toronto one is now Sun TV) why not just toss Sun TV on the air in Montreal anyway?

That might work, since it'll just be a repeat of Sun TV Toronto, but perhaps with one local Montreal version of "Canoe" thrown in. (It could even be produced in Toronto, and give some sort of Montreal feel to it...if someone there is really clever...)

Plus, Sun TV is already owned by a company out of Quebec, (Quebecor)
so it's not like they don't already know Montreal.

Some slight adjustments may have to be made to a few hours of programming a week to seperate Sun TV in Toronto from Sun tv in Montreal, but it *might* still work.
Everyone thought Sun tv would be off the air by now, but it's still alive and kicking.

The branding won't quite work in Montreal, as there is no "Sun" newspaper in that city (unlike Toronto, which does). Quebecor's only daily in Montreal is "Le Journal de Montreal" -- which, of course, is in French.

Re: Montreal TV

A market the size of Montreal should be fine with three stations, although I would like to see an English-language provincial educational broadcaster added. Global Quebec needs to have its license moved to Montreal in order for it to be an effective station that can compete with CFCF 12.

English TV in Quebec (was Re: MOntreal TV)

If I recall while vacationing in Quebec City back in '85, the only OTA English outlet in Quebec City was CKMI-TV (then-Channel 5). At the time, it was affiliated with CBC as I saw the CBMT list of stations (6-Montreal, 58-Chicoutimi et.al.) before the local ID would kick in. It was obviously owned by the same who operated the local French station on Channel 4 as the same guy who did promos on Channel 4 in French, did the "MI-5" promos in English (with a noticeable French accent). Like Montreal, Quebec City (like most all of Quebec) is predominantly French with a smaller Anglophone community. What is the English third station in Montreal? I see an application for CKMI-TV-1 (Digital). Am I to assume that maybe CKMI-TV-1 is that third outlet?

Just curious.

Thanks,

-Pete

CKMI would've been the only Anglophone outlet in Quebec City at that time, and yes, CKMI-TV-1 is the third Anglo outlet in Montreal, as Global Quebec. The station of course is still licensed to Quebec City, but its studios are in Montreal and they act as a Montreal station. I believe they still do have a small operation in Quebec City where their original operations always were, in the same building as CFCM.

My understanding is that the old CKMI rebroadcast CBMT most of the time but had a few syndicated shows that one might find on CFCF at the time, such as The Price is Right.
