MONTREAL - A spokesman for Corus Quebec blames the loss of 18 jobs at a Montreal English-language radio station on the radio market in the province.

I was shocked when I heard this. I knew the ratings weren't that great, but it was the best talk station available. 18 people losing their jobs is pretty sad. I don't think the ratings will really increase with oldies. I wish all the announcers the best, as it was an incredibly talented line-up.

It was a good news sources. I beleive It could only make money by being part of a larger Quebec / Cdn. network. As for the Oldies format, yes it's going to be a ratings dud but the costs are going to be much lower. I expect a lot of voice tracking to be done on non-drive hours.

Here's an example of a sister station of theirs they could perhaps now model after...being same company and all...

That's what I'm hoping for, where they could at least keep Charles Adler, and have a decent news presence. I don't mind music on AM in the least. I prefer it actually. I have to give 940 some credit, where they are at least saying publicly that they're changing, giving the announcers a whole week to say go0dbye on the air and let the listeners vent. This doesn't happen very often.

I hate to bring politics into this, but there just aren't many Anglophone listeners left - and those that are left listen to CJAD and CBME.

M.J.
Clearly, you haven't been to Montreal in a while... if Ever ! Montreal's english community continues to thrive and it would rival Winnipeg in it's potential market size... and I'm not even including the french % who understand the language and listen regularly. Come on... Maybe the ratings weren't so hot for this All-News station but there are other english stations that are doing very well in the city.

I'm just basing my opinion on what I saw in another forum. And there's no denying Montreal has changed demographically since Bill 101.

I have been to Montreal twice. Based on my experiences there, as an Anglophone who doesn't speak French I wouldn't want to live there.

According to the Montreal Gazette, some of the news anchors will still be there, as they plan on having some commitment to news. Who those will be, we will just have to wait and see. I'm hoping they at least keep Barry Morgan and Caroline Phaneuf, along with reporters like Lisa Fizette.(sp?), all 3 are fantastic to listen to. I don't know about traffic, whether they'll keep what they have, or go in another direction. I understand that a morning show is getting put together, so we'll have to see what they do. Dennis Trudeau is already out, as he hasn't even been promoted for mornings, and Barry Morgan has been filling in, with Michael Dean providing the news has he has been. Jim Duff has been sick with Asthma and I think Pnemonia as well, so Caroline Phaneuf has been filling in, and she's a great host along with being a go0d news anchor. ¿Who wants to guess on the over under for keeping Coast to Coast over nights versus jockless music?

Jockless music? I believe they'll run voice tracks...(?)

If they believe it's best to keep coast to coast with Art Bell, I'm sure they'll do so...(and therefore better support a format similar to the Cornwall station I've mentioned above.)

The last thing they would want is for the competition to pick it up if ratings are good enough to justify doing so.

CINW has claimed that Coast to Coast is the most listened to programme overnights in Montreal. At no0n eastern today all the details will be announced on air as to what will be happening. listen at http://www.940montreal.com . I just heard that the morning and afterno0n traffic reporters are staying, and will be doing reports for the new station. I'll be listening and posting details here for those who didn't catch the link in time.

Ok. Here are the details:

Coast to Coast is staying, running from Midnight to 6. Mid-day producer Larry Martos is staying, according to what Larry said on air, he didn't say anything about his role at the station. Traffic reporter Jennifer Allen appears to be out. (to0 bad..very sexy voice). Morning news anchor Michael Dean didn't sound like he was going to be staying, yet as Joe Cannon signed off, he hinted that Micheal may be sticking around. General Manager said that with all the money spent, that 940 will lose 1 million dollars next year alone, taking in effect the money that had been spent. The playlist on the new format will be primarily from 1965 to 1985. Sounds like they won't be afraid to rock out either, based on some of the artist mentioned...finally an oldies station that will play U2.

No other details were mentioned.

A couple of new updates. The music format won't launch until 5 pm tomorrow. Barry Morgan will be staying on for morning news and Caroline Phaneuf will be staying on for afterno0n news. Caroline will also be doing news on their sister station Q92. This is a great move as both Caroline and Barry are excellent.

Final update as new info is released on air. It's not an "oldies" format, more of a hits format from 1965 to 1985. The General Manager is saying it will be more of a top hits of those years format. They'll still be carrying traffic by copter during the drive time.

The switch has been changed to 5 pm tomorrow, and it will be a "soft launch" of just music, promos and commercials until 9:40 am on July 1st when the official launch will occur. There will be a countdown of the top 500 songs just before Canada Day, there will also be a Beatles countdown before the official launch on July 1st. The internet feed will continue and will be upgraded to a "the finest sound in stereo" (according to the General Manager).

It's nice to see a clear channel AM do a 'relevant' music format once again. All I hope is that they can make a 'go' at it! I've missed 'KB since they went away a few years ago. The only thing is that I wish 940 was easier to receive here in the Baltimore-Washington area.

On a different topic, I think that 580 and 800 in Windsor should swap formats again. 800's ratings are in the toilet and the oldies format at 580 would work much better at 800.

That's not true in the least. CKLW 800 has the highest ratings according to the latest survey. A whopping 18.2 share. Full coverage Audience is 145,000. 580 CKWW has a rating of 2.6 with 18,300 full coverage listeners. Swapping formats would put the losing station on the bigger signal. These are the Canadian BBM ratings. The Detroit numbers don't matter much to either station, they're not programming to Detroit. The next closest Windsor station is CIMX with a 6.3 share...big drop from first to second.

The latest figures released today showed CINW up slightly from a 3.8 to a 3.9. That was the last survey released for the Newstalk format. Not their worst numbers ever, but not their best. They were once over a 4 share, but compated to CJAD's 18 share (which was also up) it wasn't enough. I'm still going through 940Montreal withdrawals, but some of the music they're playing is decent. Odd thing is the talk shows they were running at 7 pm before the switch are still on. I think they were/are leased time.
