Montreal's New 1400 AM on the Air

I heard from the National Radio Club Montreal now has a new radio station on the air on 1400 AM...anyone have more info on this ?

I can get the stronger Montreal signals during the day, but on 1400 I get WSLB (ESPN Radio). Apparently they had a 1410 in Montreal at one point, but I have a local, WNER on that channel.

Yet we have two perfectly good, protected class A signals that aren't being utilized in Montreal.

If you're referring to 690 and 940, they will get used, eventually. Cogeco would have had that chance this fall if it wasn't for the competition telling the CRTC it must play fair.

How can this be? There is currently an application by Radio Humsafar for a new South Asian station on 1400 with 1,000 watts for Montreal, but the CRTC has not handed down its decision yet.

Also Radio Humsafar's application was conditional as CJWI 1610 Montreal was granted a frequency switch to 1410 several years ago (and power increase to 10,000 watts). If CJWI does actually make the move to 1410 then Radio Humsafar will withdraw their application for 1400 and instead pursue 1610. Confused? So am I............

Here's the list of AM applications for Montreal in front of the CRTC as of today:

600 - 250 watts days/50 watts nights (South Asian/Multilingual) Neeti P. Ray
690 - 50,000 watts fulltime (News-Talk) (French) Paul Tietolman & Nicolas Tetrault
690 - 50,000 watts fulltime (Gay & Lesbian) (French) Evanov
690 - 50,000 watts fulltime (Sports) (English) (frequency switch for CKGM 990) Bell Media
940 - 50,000 watts fulltime (News-Talk) (English) Paul Tietolman & Nicolas Tetrault
940 - 50,000 watts fulltime (All Traffic) (English) Cogeco
1400 - 1,000 watts fulltime (South Asian) Radio Humsafar
1530 - 1,000 watts daytime only (Religion) (French) Communications Media Evangelique
1610 - 1,000 watts fulltime (Spanish) La Mega Radio
** - 1610 - 1,000 watts fulltime (South Asian) Radio Humsafar

** - As mentioned above CJWI 1610 Montreal was granted a frequency switch to 1410 several years ago. If CJWI makes the move to 1410 then Radio Humsafar will withdraw their application for 1400 and pursue 1610 instead.

As someone who is within range of all Montreal AM's I can guarantee you that there is no station in Montreal at 1400. I am still hearing WSLB dominating.

I wonder if it might have been CJWI testing on 1410? The cp for their frequency switch from 1610 expires on October 26, 2011.

What about 1410, I have my local WNER so I can't try for anything else. Just like WSLB it's ESPN Radio so you'll hear similar programming. Are you hearing anything else on 1410? Montreal's CJWI could be there.

All I'm hearing on 1410 is a very weak WNER. CJWI is still on 1610. I figured they better move frequencies pretty quick or 1410 will never be theirs.

Seems like Canada is trying to get rid of AM

This is true in medium sized and smaller markets, but the FM band is absolutely full in places like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, etc. which means proposed new stations for these markets have no choice but to locate on the AM band.

We're not phasing out AM. Only the corporations that run small town stations are turning theirs off. It's alive and well in the cities.
