Just curious how many here have ever worked at a station with a Middle of The Road format. I did and it seriously skewed my musical tastes. I remember songs and artists that most people have never heard of. An example would be "Save the Sunlight" by Herb Alpert and Lanni Hall.

I have, and you're right it was a great format, and could be really communicative. Some of the most enduring personalities are from MOR radio.
..and I remember that Herb Alpert song! Lani Hall was at one time a singer for Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66.

Agreed, lets also add that the audience for this format was great, they really got into what we were talking about and part of our job off the air was to find topics of interest to mention between the records. My P.D. used to say "Talk about what the people are talking about". This was great training for talk radio and why I never did a talk show I'll never know.

The MOR jock is rare these days. It's the format where I had the most fun. The station was WFTL in Fort Lauderdale, it will always remain the favorite in my career.

When I think of the huge staff this little station had it amazes me. News anchors, news reporters, sports director, you name it we had it. You'd have to go to a news station in a major market to find a staff as large as we had But then this was long before the conglomerates took over and heratage AM's were still holding their own against the FM's. In other words a long time ago!

Ditto for me. How 'bout "Making Memories" by Frankie Laine, "To The Door Of The Sun" by Al Martino, "Cab Driver" by the Mills Brothers or "Seattle" by Perry Como?

I treasure the opportunities I had to work in this type radio, and all the great personalities these stations featured. Folks like Burl Womack from WSAV in Savannah, Ga, George Fisher from WGAC in Augusta, Ga, Gene McKay from WIS in Columbia, SC, and Bill Powell from WMAZ in Macon, Ga. All were truly entertainers. <P ID="signature">______________

I know all those songs too! I haven't heard The Al Martino song in years. I used to play it all the time. As for Making Memories, I had the 45! Cab Driver was a big favorite when I worked at WSOC-AM in the '80's. Naturally I knew of it long before that!

Another one of my favorites is "Portrait of My Love" by Steve Lawrence.

In the MOR personalities department I enjoyed John Lupton at WFTL Fort Lauderdale, and Arnie Warren at WGBS Miami. Arnie had a character voice he would do and it was fun to watch him change characters as he talked (to himself) on the air!
