MOR vs. Adult Contemporary

(also posted on the Soft AC/EZ Listening/Adult Standards board...)

Lately I've been rather intrigued by the concept of the "Middle of the Road" (MOR) format. I'm curious... are there any radio stations in 2010 that still identify themselves as having the MOR format? Has the MOR format pretty much become extinct, or did it just morph into Adult Contemporary (while changing its name in the process)?

Can stations that identify as "easy listening" or "soft AC" still call themselves "MOR"? Or was there simply a group of artists that were staples in the MOR format who are no longer on the radio (thus the absence of the format)?

Any thoughts?

The closest thing you'll get to MOR is a station like WROW in Albany, Magic 590. Other than that, the Dial Global nostalgia format is pretty MOR, but will play some more "modern" artists like Phil Collins ballads. Or Celine Dion.

MOR, which was a big part of the great AM full service stations of the past is gone.

Maybe WDUV in the Tampa market. Also WWNU in Columbia, SC, which is new but well on its way to being a thing of the past, if you ask most people. I'll have to find a link to that one.

Yeah! The closest to MOR today is the Adult Standards format.
