More AM coming to Reno

2 new AM stations are under construction(550 and 1060) and 2 more are pending grant (1010 and 1180). Any ideas on format holes for these facilities?

Wow!

They are building more AM stations in Reno!

Do they know something others don't?

Being a guy whose on a show that runs on 9 AM's (0ne FM) in big markets I want to see AM hang in there and prosper.

Does anyone know who the folks are behind the Reno deal?

Jerry Gordon

With 4 new AMs plus a handful of new FMs, Reno is quickly becoming a market over served with radio stations. These new AMs will likely end up godcasters or ethniccasters as there is no demand for more talk, sports, or music on AM. In fact, AM only accounts for 17% of all radio listenership in the market with one station, KKOH, being 10% of the 17%.

550 is owned by Fred Weinburg through a licensee corporation or LLC
1060 by Tom Huth through a licensee corporation or LLC
1180 by The Estate of Eastern Sierra Broadcasting
1010 has yet to be decided by the FCC between the licensee of 1340 in Reno and a Baltimore based group.

I have heard that 1590 KQLO has gone silent. Anyone know anything? No filings at the FCC to show that the Courts got it back or for a silent authorization.

Fred corporately owns other radio in Nevada as well...
With yet another AM filing window coming up in 2012 it will be interesting to see how many more folks file for more stations.

Regarding the estate of Eastern Sierra Broadcasting (permittee for a new Reno AM in the middle of the dial)....would that be a CP issued to the late Chris Kidd?

How close WAS Chris to signing that station on? He mentioned it to me
a few years ago when I ran into him at the post office in South Lake Tahoe..(where he had operated KTHO some years earlier).

Shortly after, i read in these forums that Chris had recently died.

Can anyone fill us in on the how and when of Mr. Kidd's passing?

Yes, the cp for that one was Chris Kidd's. I recall he passed away a couple of years ago. At that point it was only on paper. I believe he died from a heart problem.

I am the administrator for the Estate. The permit for 1180 was granted Thursday. Chris passed quite suddenly May 31 2009 near midnight at his apartment in Alameda. He left behind a wife to whom he had been married only 3 months. Cause of death was a massive cardiac attack. It is believed that the underlying cause was due to a mix of prescription drugs that effected the heart....Somehow this got past the doctor and the druggist and so Chris thought that it was OK to be mixing what side panel warnings counterindicated mixing. The estate holds the newly issued permit for 1180--the permit for KCWK, North Las Vegas which has a pending move to Laughlin and an increase of day power to 50,000watts as well as a bunch of FM translator applications in the Sacramento, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Reno, Grass Valley, and Fallon,NV area. All permits are held by Eastern Sierra Broadcasting. For the record the attorney for the Estate is George McNitt in Oakland and the FCC attorney is Dan Alpert in Arlington, VA. Consultant engineer on all filings is Bill Sitzman of IBC Engineering in New York State.

Sorry to hear. Usually these massive heart attacks are anatomical in nature with respect to the arterial placquing breaking off and forming an instant clot. I wonder what meds he could have mixed. Sorry to go off topic. My condolences. :-[
