More Atlanta Tower Sites

I can always use a Varsity fix myself...maybe if I can find a cheap airfare in the spring, I'll come down for another round. I'd love to get in to see the channel 17 transmitter before the plug is pulled, if anyone has any contacts there... :)

In the interest of accuracy, you need to correct a couple of errors in the narrative.
The Witcher Road site was built by the previous owners of 104.1, supervised by Ready Teddy Ronneberger who currently works for Cox. Katz Communications- which became NewCity - bought it in place.
The Channel 69 antenna is still atop the WPP hotel. It is the pole on which the four - bay you show is mounted. It's a slot - fed RCA pylon, for which the FM antenna manufacturer (ERI) fabricated galvinized steel slot covers which cover the openings in the pylon. Once covered, it makes a perfect mounting pole. The pole beneath it was the original pole on which was mounted the WGZC/WQXI-FM antenna. Also mounted on it, but not visible in the picture, is the original WWWQ antenna, a single bay Shiveley antenna in a radome. Both Q antennas are directional.

I'm a little confused, Johnny, when you say the channel 69 antenna is still atop the Westin Peachtree Plaza. Do you mean the former channel 69 antenna? The current ones, both analog and digital, are at the new site off I-20 and Boulevard according to the FCC data base.

Always happy to do so! Thanks for filling in some of the gaps.

It isn't active - the slots are blocked, and the waveguide below the bottom of the pole has been removed. But the antenna is the pole. The thing probably weighs 3- 4 tons. It would be a royal PIA to try to get it off there. And since ch 69 is being abandoned for television, it's pretty worthless anyway. As of the 19th of Feb, the one on Chester Ave won't be active either. WUPA's digital channel is in the 40s if memory serves.
And on second look, the original Q antenna does show - it's the dark lump opposite the 4 bay just beloiw the waveguide elbow complex on the right side of the pole.

Scott,

The WTBS/WPCH self-supporter began in 1949 as the tower for WAGA-TV, but with a different "top". After WAGA built its newer tower on Briarcliff Rd. (south of the "Briarcliff Towers"), the site of its present studio, the downtown tower was cut to half its size with a big time/temp. sign on top.

When Turner moved into the small facility, it rebuilt the downtown tower. I have heard it is to be taken down in 2009.

(If someone knows the dates of these events, please contribute (My childhood memory is a little fuzzy.).)

I first visited Atlanta in 1975 and drove past what was then WTCG. I could swear only the short tower was there at the time. At least, that's how I remember it.

Does anyone know when the tall current analog channel 17 tower was erected?

The tower on W. Peachtree St., which currently supports Peachtree TV and the former main for 99.7 (currently WWWQ), was built about 1968. It replaced the original tower at that location and was built for the original owners of Ch 17. I >think< the calls were WJRJ. When Turner bought it it became WTCG (Turner Communications Group) and then WTBS later. Ethel Holley put 99.7 on it in the late 60's or early 70's.

The original tower at this location was a 4-leg self supporter. It was much shorter. From the pictures I've seen it was probably only 300-500' AGL. It was used for Channel 5 (WAGA), the original tenant of the building just in front of the tower which fronts on W. Peachtree St. If you go over to the Channel 5 studios on Briarcliff you can see a picture of the building with the calls on it from the early 50's hanging in one of the hallways. (If it's still there...)

Some folks think that the original tower was increased in height, but if you see some of the old pictures they are of a 4-leg tower. The current tower at that location is a 3-leg.

The other, shorter, tower at the current site is mostly abandonded. It was built by Cable Atlanta in the early 80's (now Comcast) for distribution of CATV to various head-ends in the area using CARS. It has many unused microwave dishes on it.

Is this near 10 St.? And could fall on GT's mammary if allowed to?

Yes, and yes.
