More Bill Virgin - Bad Ads

He's right about bad ads being so bad, they're effective. Case in point: Tom Shane.

But in the long run, he's just contributing to the problem. By making and publishing the results of these polls, the ad agenices and clients are only going pat themselves on their backs when they see their ads stand out to people.

..or slap themselves on the face BLIND -

But I have good news, I've just saved money on my car insurance by switching to...ah, forget it.

Ads are only effective if they sold you something. The vast majority miss the target. Every time I hear an ad that sounds like two radio announcers got married and spawned a product pitch, I switch to anything else. Target missed before the sped up disclaimers are even cued up.

But if it's a lousy ad and you can prove it's moving crap off the shelves, then it's not a lousy ad after all. Or if you can show a believable PowerPoint presentation to thinking-impaired agency buyers that your spots can somehow be given the credit for helping to see crap, then you get to keep your job for another cycle.

The ones that are cued up, such as the disclaimers on the car dealer and the medical spots, are legally required.

Your brown-nose example does ring true. But not all spots are designed for immediate results. Some are simply there to keep top-of-mind awareness up.
