More Bull Crap From The Suits At WRKO

Here's the "official" statement from the suits at WRKO on the canning of its news team. If you believe this crap I have a leaking tunnel to sell you in Boston...

Statement as it appears in Boston Radio watch with thanks:

Here's the official statement from WRKO on yesterday's changes :

"This decision was primarily based on our mission to build upon the core identity of WRKO-AM. It is a talk station, and we need to put all of our resources into improving our talk format.

Because of our format, WRKO will continue to talk about the news of the day through the ongoing dialogue between our show hosts and ourlisteners.

In addition, WRKO will be providing news content to our listeners through a number of different platforms, including our mobile media partners, our web site, our agreements with the Associated Press and Fox News, and innovative features such as customized traffic reports. We also plan to expand further by finding new and entertaining ways to bring relevant news and information to the Boston market through our news partnerships and other initiatives.
"

Well, that says it all, Paul. If they have FOX NEWS they don't want real news.

Listo & Rod aren't necessary if they are going to be so blatant about publishing fiction on the airwaves.

Fox News is more real than fake memos, Mr. Rather...

I understand that one reason for jettisoning of news dept. is that the Green Team is being a bigger liability
to them than they were to WWZN. Quack, quack! That huge Sox deal, too but at least that should produce some
ratings.

Rush: 20 years of talk radio and counting. Franken bails out after 2 1/2 once his paychecks stop showing up
on a network $20 million in debt. Good thing the suits at Air America aren't running the country or the
state now. Gotta balance those books and pay your debts!

Given his huge dip in ratings, I would think Mr. Borders-Language-Culture might be the next to go. Will
Boston disconnect from the Savage Nation?

Of course I was mostly listening to Laura I. on WTKK. Jackie Mason was on--funny!

Bob, you know I think you're a cool radio host, but...defending the home of O.J. Simpson as a "news organization" is like calling George W. Bush a humanitarium (that's his word for humanitarian).

This is horrible for the men and women of the former WRKO News staff.
It's also a bad thing for the Boston radio audience, because it gives the market one less editorial voice.
I think it's important to have at least two commercial stations doing local news.
Boston could soon become a one (major) newspaper town, and that also would be a bad thing.
Only the extremists on one side or another would want their view to be the only one that's presented.
Wait, isn't that what "news" is like in totalitarian states like Iran, Cuba and North Korea?

Fox does news well--Chris Wallace for example. They have opinion shows like Hannity and Colmes (FNC)
and Bill O'Reilly (yeah, I know the libs hate him, but Fox has its own smarmy answer to the smarmy
Keith Olbermann--and I think BOR's ratings are higher). Apparently if a news organization tries to be
centrist or right-leaning, it has no credibility. I'm not defending them for the OJ thing at all --that's
not Fox news but Fox entertainment anyway. Speaking of entertainment divisions (and yes I'm focusing on TV): How about CBS and its hatchet job on The Reagans (got
shuttled to Showtime)? And yes, I know you'll bring up the Path to 9/11 (on ABC) but that was just as unkind
to Bush as it was to Clinton.

>>at least two commercial stations doing local news

Doesn't WTKK do local news at least in the daytime?

>>Boston could soon become a one (major) newspaper town, and that also would be a bad thing.

Agreed, and not just editorially. There are some stories that only one paper or the other put out;
otherwise you wouldn't know.

By the way remember the Kerry botched joke? A reporter in L.A. spoke to Michael Graham about how
nobody in town but his station carried the speech and it almost didn't get reported on by THEM. Not that
Kerry's lame attempt at humor is the biggest thing in the world, but if his station hadn't mentioned it/
covered the speech...

Two Fox employees re: OJ special btw

Bill O'Reilly: "I'm not going to watch the Simpson show or even look at the book. If any company sponsors the TV program, I will not buy anything that company sells - ever."

Geraldo Rivera: the book is "appalling. I will bash this project every minute I have the opportunity to bash this project."

Raccoon:

1)The Path to 9/11 was propaganda for Bush. They made it appear like it gave equal slaps, but it did not.
They slapped the Democrats with this in an attempt to steal the 2006 election. It failed.

2)Guess you didn't see that Fox memo to make the news up and use quotes from Iraqis celebrating the
Democratic win?

Faux News Smoking Gun

Incredible.

Huffington Post has obtained an internal Fox News memo written by its Vice President of news detailing the networks game plan the day Democrats won control of both the Senate and the House.

Check out the whole memo, but here are a few tidbits:

"And let's be on the lookout for any statements from Iraqi insurgents, who must be thrilled at the prospect of a Dem-controlled congress.

The question of the day, and indeed for the rest of bush's term, is: What's the Dem plan for Iraq? THis could be a very short live shot for Jim Angle, but he'll try."

Of course, as Keith Olbermann pointed out tonight it's noteworthy that Fox News doesn't give a ---- about "what's Bush's plan for Iraq?"

NOW IF YOU WANT TO ACCEPT THAT FOX GARBAGE AS REAL NEWS, YOUR OPINION ON THIS BOARD WILL BE TAKEN WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/17/AR2006111700533_pf.html

On Friday, a number of Fox station managers were wondering what to do with the Simpson special.

"I think everybody thought Fox was beyond this, beyond those days of 'When Animals Attack' and all that kind of stuff," said a disgusted general manager of a top 50 Fox station who did not want to be named. The GM said he would bet that as soon as one big station-owning company rejects the Simpson show, "other owners will follow."

Among the more creative ways of dealing with a public relations disaster, a Fox station in Seattle has promised that if it airs the interview, it will not sell any local ads. Instead it will help tape public service announcements for local organizations that aid victims of domestic abuse, which will run in place of local ads.

A half dozen people, some of them on the air for decades, get fired and all you guys can do is engage in this political circle jerk for the 100th time?? Fox news is slanted to the right, CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, NPR are slanted to the left. Who cares, move on.

that's not all we can do, the Smoking Gun/Fox News Memo is a component of all this.

It is clear everyone who has responded to this so far respects the quality of the former RKO news staff.
A bigger problem is the way they presented mostly WRKO's conservative side.

Perhaps the harder thing for many of the righties on this board is that they have to swallow a fact we've been preaching for ages: Conservatives are pirahna who will eat their own on a whim.

This is a first class example of that.

Amazing !! DJango and I agree on something. Will the world soon come to an end? ;)

Let's focus on great newsmen and newwomen who have lost their jobs because of the idiots who run WRKO.

I know both Rod Fritz for whom I once worked and Listo Fisher who I worked beside. To have these two outstanding newsmen on the street is a travesty.

Only hope that Kahn and Wolfe get canned days before a major holiday.
What scum of the earth. Attack intended.

Casablanca, have you considered buying 1 share of Entercom stock to be able to go to Board meetings and get us the inside information?

Market Scan Entercom Offers Upside R.M. Schneiderman, 08.07.06, 11:26 AM ET

Shares of Entercom are a bargain now, Banc of America Securities said Monday, claiming the national radio broadcaster’s stock is trading as if it will buy all 39 of the small-market radio stations that CBS has put up for sale.

After Entercom Communications (nyse: ETM - news - people ) posted a 29% second-quarter loss last week, investors apparently feared that the broadcaster will add to its woes by buying up all of the CBS (nyse: CBS - news - people ) stations. "Entercom stock appears to be discounting the risk that the company acquires all of the available CBS Radio stations - something we think is unlikely," said Jonathan Jacoby, an analyst for the research firm.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since Entercom has documented "woes" that should inspire you! You can go into google and find people who sell 1 share only - if your stockbroker won't sell you one share. Johnny Carmen (a.k.a. Johnny Waddell or Johnny Angel or Johnny Stockbroker) is or was in that business - he would know better than I.

Go to a meeting of the shareholders and protest - or at least get the annual report and see if they give a reason for the firings.

>>What scum of the earth

Do we know if they made the decision by themselves or did it come down from corporate in Bala Cynwyd PA?
It's amazing that a company that pays $20 mil a yr/10 yrs for baseball rights can't come up with money
for salaries for news people; or that the same company (G.Media) that's paying Jay Severin for a long term
contract also can't spring for more local news (like beyond 7 pm).

:p

I wonder if a "potential sale" is pending at WRKO?

As we already know, a broadcast group (or conglomerate) can buy a station in the morning and sell it to somebody else in the afternoon?

Most of the time when 'key on-air people' get blown out the door...it's often done to 'entice' a potential buyer! ::)

>>I wonder if a "potential sale" is pending at WRKO?

They'll have to take on that $20 million/yr Red Sox contract for next 10 years.

Maybe they have an escape clause where, if Theo turns out to be as big a bust as Jason, RKO can bail early on both contracts.
