More ch-ch-ch-changes

Ross Block and most of the staff are out at CBS owned WSJT in Tampa. Being replaced by the BA goon squad. Looks like Kathy Curtis in mornings remains the only local show. GM/market manager said that they "needed to take smooth jazz back to it's roots". You're not going back to the roots with BA. Samuel Johnson said that "the future is purchased by the present". Oops...all out bucks! Another nail in the coffin for the format fulltime!

wsjt had a godawful playlist so going to the BA network fulltime will actually be an improvement as hard as that is to believe. still, this is another black eye for a format that is covered in them. this is the first powerful big-sized market station to go full-fledged BA network (except for mornings). others may follow and once that happens the end will soon be near.

I would be scared to death if I worked at the CBS SJ stations in Detroit or LA. I hate it for the staff of WSJT, I streamed them for years and they were all great, even when the music wasn't. 6 months from now, when the ratings have gone in the crapper, the suits in NY will wonder why.

If I was working at any radio station in any format I would be starting to actively look for other sources of income. Cox did some slashing in their Atlanta cluster including long time news staffers.

I had a feeling SJT would drink the kool-aid. They had more live humans than probably any other SJ station still in the format. My gut says WLOQ is next. They are all about belt tightening and money but still live AM, Midday, and PM. They are running a BA playlist already although they are not actually consulted by the company. They might as well barter out the day and run the network.

Tis the season for massive layoffs. I worked for the cluster that called the staff of one station at 3pm on Christmas day to tell them that the station was changing formats at 4pm and going jockless.

Not only did WSJT have personalities, but they were all great heritage Tampa Bay area personalities. Alicia Kaye has been in Tampa since 1990, Al Santana has been a jazz DJ since the '80s, and George Nix has been in the market since at least the '70s. So, yes you may say that music will be better on the BA feed, but this is a serious blow to live, local radio.

i have to agree with orange. i vacationed in florida earlier this year, and as bad as BA is, WSJT was WORSE believe it or not. so yes BA would be an improvement, shocking as that may be. WSJT at times played multiple vocals in a row, and not just soul vocals, we're talking Top 40 Hot AC vocals like Leona Lewis Bleeding Love!! so i hate to say but BA network on WSJT is a slight improvement back to smooth jazz. wow, i can't believe i said that.

Have you listened to BA Network yet. They are playing a lot of A/C and Urban A/C vocals..and I think Bleeding Love did sneak onto a few stations they consult, if not onto the actual network, which is bangin' John Legend, Wayne Brady, and Beyonce.

Remember the saying "Dance with the one who brung ya" SJ stations quit doing that. They quit playing contemporary pop instrumental music, which is what the listeners came to them for. Paper diaries tend to reflect loyalty and habit, PPM reflects actual listening..If SJ stations had continued to play SJ then people would actually be listening to them instead of just trying to remain loyal while listening to iPods, CDs or AC stations.
