Nightjock Adam Drake is out, so has a weekender.
The Vault, a alternative country show hosted by Shayne Hollinger has been also been cut after it was just got promoted to the 11pm-2am slot.
This come at the heels of the KTFW bloodbath in January.
Now wonder they both have .1's for ratings! I wonder who's next?

How far does the signal go? Does it reach Dallas?

Step 1 for recovery would be to replace their boring, restrictive all Texas (and virtually all-male) Country format. Just play good alt-country, whether it comes from Texas, California, Iceland, whatever. Mix back in classics from Willie, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, etc.
Add some Drive-By Truckers, Old 97's, Lucero, deep cuts from Miranda Lambert and it would be a really cool station.

The real problem in ratings etc for the Ranch is that it's barely even a FW station. I can't get them past central Arlington and even then it's really scratchy. Give them full coverage on the DFW market they'll do well. I'm not talking top 20, but they'll pull in enough numbers to justify their existence, and more importantly they'll bill enough to justify their existence.

If the Ranch wasn't backed by a hedge fund to make it float, it would be called 'the double wide'. It's a rich man's toy. He bought a country stick, and moved the studio to town for braggin rights, yet no one can hear it.

I suppose you're making a hypothetical statement, since the Ranch will never have a full market signal or anything close to it. Right now, like you said, Arlington is about the eastern limit of their coverage. Even after their upgrade, with an increase from 80 to 100kW and antenna height a little over 300 foot more than they have now, it won't change much. They may gain some rather sketchy coverage into northwest Dallas County, but even that's debatable because of that pesky co-channel translator in Garland.

Except the Range sounds like it's being broadcast through a pipe cleaner on one side of my car.

Then you haven't listened lately. Both STL's have been repaired, along with several other things. The Range sounds better than it has in the last few years. That whole left channel right channel issue has be solved.

The TAB website has a job listing looking for a night jock, so maybe it's not a cost-cutting thing...

You could be right, looking at Adam's Facebook looks like he has another opportunity. Also looks like Hollinger maybe moving into the 7-mid spot

You would know better than I about all the fixing up, however, I was in town last weekend to watch the Stars (unfortunately get beat miserably by the Blackhawks) and it sounded like the Range was being broadcast in Low fidelity. Truly, and I don't mean this in any kind of mean way, it sounds terrible. I'm from DFW originally, but don't live there now, I just come back to visit. I can't pick up the Ranch in Plano where I was staying, so I had my in-laws tune in the Range on the way to the game. They asked why it sounded terrible. I don't know what the problems are, but it's not good.

Just to clear the air. Adam Drake took a PD job that is closer to family. He and his wife have a new baby and this is a great move for them. Shayne Hollinger will be replacing him Monday in the 7-11p slot. Live and local radio is alive and well at KFWR.

Sorry Chuck but I disagree. It still sounds like lo-fi AM radio to me :/

Kevin, does this mean there's a part time slot opening up?

Adam is now the PD and MD at KORA in College Station. He's a good dude and I hate to see him go. Local artists loved him.

check out 88.7....pretty good mix to listen to at work

I listen quite a bit during commercials on the Ticket. I may be a biased alum, but KTCU is the best college radio station I've ever heard. Great mix, as you said. Russell Scott plays an incredible mix of music in the mornings.
