More changes at J93.3

Morning show co-host Lori Lynn Leonard has left the building as has long-time midday host/music director Tiffany Thorpe. Thorpe has gone to join former partner Jerry Williams (former J93.3 PD) at the Gospel Music Channel. No idea where or why Leonard left.

No satellite, please.

How about Christian Alternative/Hip-Hop. It does look like the "Dirty South" would have a Christian Alternative/Hip-Hop station. So many are targeting the older Christians that have children at soccer pratice and a big SUV outside their Paulding County home, 3 hours from work. It looks like someone would target their teenaged kids, the party crowd living in the city and those 20-34 year-old Christians, looking for a Christian alternative to Hot-107-9, 105-3 The Buzz, 99X and 95-5 The Beat. I enjoy Christian Alternative and Hip-Hop, but the only time you can hear it on the radio is usually on the weekend or on a countdown show. I know I would listen to J93-3 more if it was Christian Alternative/Hip-Hop than I do now. Right now J93-3 is more like "Fish South" with a little extra static for your drive home. I think most would pick The Fish over that. The ratings also seem to reflect this.
______________

Apparently they're testing the waters with their "Late Night Live" on Saturday nights. I have no idea how well it's being received, but it's a major breakaway from J's traditional format and one I think would do well if they considered going to it fulltime. Really, at a 0.7 what have they got to lose?

They would have alot to lose!!!
If you look at the ratings county by county, you will see J93 does EXTREMELY well in areas where the signal is good. On the southside, they blow smoke in most demos.....#2 18-34, #2 25-54 etc. These are desirable demo's too....Fayette and Coweta counties are examples.
The "big C-1 signal" is too far south to serve the entire Atlanta area. There are more cows and chickens then people in their pop ccount!! The Fish has a dominate signal, metro wide, and will always have better numbers. But J93 does fill a niche where Fish has no signal, which is all the southwest quadrant of the Atlanta area.

J keeps trying to fill that same old wine skin. I still think it can be more than a Southside player.

I know I would go out of my way to recieve an Alternative/Hip-Hop Christian station. Right now, J isn't preset in any of my radios. Like you said, the Fish has better signal, spins the same music and has better personalities. J is also missing out on an opportunity to reach young people for Christ. Their weekend show is a nice step in the right direction towards that audience.

I use to know someone who worked a J. Never worked there myself though. I've heard a rumor J93-3 is considering a flip to something like Victory 91.5, with a mix of different styles. I don't know if there is any truth to that and wouldn't spread it outside this thread. I don't think they will do anything different, other than shows/personalities. Is it true a will from the former owner requires the station stay CCM? I'm sure most J listeners don't know about that. Your favorite station is somewhat protected by that.
______________

Why do we have to monitor it for EAS?

> The "big C-1 signal" is too far south to serve the entire

Yeah, and the new EAS plan is requiring Atlanta stations to monitor it (or 106.1, 107.1, 102.9 -- none of which have good signals in town).

We have an omni FM antenna about 50 feet above ground at Georgia Tech, and we're not pulling 93.3 in cleanly.

Would Christian CCM Oldies mixed with some currents (more that 2 years ago) work? There is a whole lot of CCM music going back to the 60's that may get re-diseovered by today's audience. Victory 91.5 had Backtracks at one time but discontinued that show. Also, there is a sydicated show call "Streets of Gold" that would have a format similar that could work. How about moving the format to a "K-Love" format? This station and 91.5 were the only FM CCM stations on the air for many years long before the Fish. When at their height, they programmed this way and carried many national programs in prime-time ("Focus on the Family", etc.). Instead they are trying to copy the Fish.

The Fish has copied the J93 formula......they even stole the J93 imaging,"safe and fun for the family!" Salem attempted to hire the J manager and DID hire the sales manager and some air talent.
J93 was doing this format, and executing it well, before Salem even landed in the Atlanta market. Before Salem even dreamed of doing FM CCM!
I don't believe Mr. Watkins stipulated in his will that the kids had to do anything with regard to the numerous businesses under the Watkins umbrella. The old man was committed to spreading the word....I think his children know their father would want this important ministry continued....but not necessarily with J93 being part of it.In other words, I could see J93 being sold to fund the non-commercial Radio Training Network.
SSSnake...I didn't know J93 was an assignment in Atlanta for WREK. My Atlanta stations must monitor WLTM and, for now, WSB-FM. This will probably change to WABE and WLTM.

According to the plan on the GAB web site, you gotta monitor WLTM and another station, of which the only ones near Atlanta are 93.3, 107.1, 106.1. No other Atlanta station besides WLTM is on the Region Primary or National Primary Relay lists.

America's leading Christian AC launched the "Safe for the whole Family" motto in Dallas, and Salem later expanded that to all their music stations. I believe that station used the slogan before Salem bought it and then Salem trademarked it. They did not steal it from WVFJ they had it in other markets before J used it. WVFJ added the fun part to skirt the trademark. The Fish was more based on a station in Dallas that had mass-appeal for years than any local station.
Most of metro Atlanta did not have a clear signal for Christian music until the Fish came and even at this point they are still the only one in the region that plays music every hour.

Yes...I saw that too! Whats up with GEMA? After all these years there is still no comprehensive state EAS plan. NOAA weather radio is supposed to be a backup channel but there is no requirement to monitor NOAA. And what about the "State EAS Handbook" we are required to post along with the FCC EAS book? I can't find that thang anywhere!!
It's good WLTM is the new primary in Atlanta. Mike Lawing, Director of Engineering, ClearChannel Atlanta, and Jim Gantner, WLTM chief engineer, are top notch professionals. I think they will pay more attention and insure the Georgia EAS is operated in a more professional manner.

But I thought it was "ATLANTA'S J93 point 3". Should be "PEACHTREE CITY'S J93.3"
:)

Re: J93.3 Southern Gospel?

Maybe we should talk to BillyBarou. Was he tapped to help a turn to Southern Gospel?
