More changes at KDFC?

They didn't say too much, but I saw this tiny statement on KDFC's website:

"KDFC Reveals Big News
Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest ones. Tune in Monday morning at 8 when we, quite simply, make KDFC better. Be here!"

Any clues? I wonder if Entercom dropping classical music on KDFC?

I hope not!

I wouldn't worry about KDFC flipping formats anytime soon. If the notice about changes on Monday were about a format flip, I doubt they'd post it on their website, since people who view the website are primarily fans of the current classical format.

The classical music moves to HD-2 and the new KDFC begins at 8 AM as Q-102 or something like that! "Long Live Rock Be It Dead Or Alive." Are you ready for the changes?

Oh! By The Way: When Pigs Fly!

My friend's uncle knows someone who's sister is an insider at Entercom. They say that Entercom is so happy with the success of The Wolf, that they are going to modify KDFC and apply some of the same top 40 principles which have made The Wolf succeed. In hopes of appealing to younger, hipper Classical music fans they are going to apply a more Top 40 approach, which will include a playlist primarily composed of sped-up edits of Classical music released after 2003, and much less emphasis on the burned Gold from composers Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Jock breaks will be limited to :10 seconds over ramp, and no backselling. Also, rumor has it JV and Elvis are being brought back for mornings. ;D

From the KDFC e-letter

They are making their 8a-12Nooon programming more music intensive with only a couple of commercials each hour. KDFC's more music mornings for at-work listening.

It's going to be a new Hot contest. It's the Symphony of the day. At 7:10 the morning guy will play the symphony and then when it plays again caller 9 wins 1000 bucks...and qualifies for front row seats for the Three Tenors in Vegas.

The funny thing is that KDFC is the "REAL" Oldies station in San Francisco... Actually on Monday morning KDFC kicks off an A-Z 10,000 song music marathon! All your favorites from the 1600's, 1700's, 1800's, and 1900's....
Four Centuries of your favorite Hits all on one radio station!

I've only listened to KDFC sine the first of the year online (I'm in SoCAL). It seems to be a very well programmed station, and has a lot of high end advertising as well. My guess is like KOIT, it's a cash cow Entercom doesn't want to kill anytime soon. MAX was the weak link, and was done away with pretty much the day Entercom took full control.

Tune in Monday morning, XCountry...

This is the official scoop...directly from KDFC's program director through their opt-in email list:
Dear XXXXXXXX

How do you make a classical radio station better? You play more classical music. Yes, sometimes the best ideas are the simple ones.

On the air we’ve been teasing the arrival of something big, something new on KDFC. Pardon my special letter here, but I want to let you in on that secret -- the debut of Mostly Music Mornings. From 8am until Noon on the 21st, and every Monday thereafter, I’ll play at least 57 minutes of music every hour. Start your work-week with more of what helps you get your work done.

Don’t miss the first Mostly Music Morning, this Monday at 8am.

Hoyt Smith
The KDFC Morning Show, 5:30-11am

"...someone earlier in this post said something about Q 102. Is this Q 102 going to be rock, chr pop, hip hop or what?"

X-Country: We know you want a "real" CHR/Pop station, but KDFC is not going to become what you want in the near future. "Q102" keeps getting mentioned here as more of a joke than anything. Though Entercom may have dumped classical formats in other markets, KDFC is in the Top 5 or Top 10 every rating period, and makes revenue. David Eduardo would probably tell you the station does not have the most ideal demographic (i.e.: most of their listeners are old fogeys), and they're probably only number 12 or 15 (or something) in terms of revenue, but Entercom is simply not going to drop classical. First, it would be stupid for them to risk solid revenue and gamble on a new format, and second - being the upstart new company in town, they would make classical music fans angry and get bad publicity in the local media.

If ratings fall over the next year or so, and they can make the case that Classical isn't profitable (like Saul Levine in LA), then they can justify dumping it, but not until then.

In the meantime, you're more likely to get your "real CHR/Pop" station if MOViN 99.7, Wild 94.9, or Star 101.3 decide it would get them better ratings to 'morph' in that direction. MOViN may be a good bet if their ratings don't improve.

Let's face it. I don't any radio station in this market flipping formats to CHR/Pop anytime soon. The last station to try it, KZQZ(Z95.7) tried and failed as a Top 40 station, though I hate to admit this, but the most successful show Z95.7 ever had was that STUPID Total Request Zone, which is a lot similar to that of the MTV show Total Request Live. So, if you want your CHR/Pop fix, there are currently hundureds of CHR/Pop stations streaming on the world wide web for you to choose from.
One of which is KHOP@95-1 www.khop.com

Saul Levine's idea what classical music radio should be is just his idea what country radio should be about. His announcer's on KMZRT were unlistenable, etc. Saul Levine has the bucks (good for him!) and like most people who have lots of money -- those who have the gold rule -- no matter how ignorant and arrogant they are.

KDFC relates to their listeners VERY well and their music mix is fantastic (heck, their music library spans over 300 years!). San Francisco is an eclectic city and no company these days is going to risk alienating their listeners. Cheap Channel thought they could make a major killing and in the process they have killed themselves. Their stock price is tanking and they are tanking as they do a fire sale to keep financing what they have left of their empire by selling off their entertainment and other media assets. I am a strong believer in what is called "guerilla marketing."-- being on the top as a part of a niche than be in breakneck competition with the same music and same sounding on-air personalities.

KDFC rocks...and they know it....and Entercom knows it!
