More changes at WZON

Big problem I see with this: lacking the two crown jewels when it comes to PBP in the Bangor market:

1. U of Maine Sports, hockey in particular

2. Red Sox Baseball

One assumes Townsquare believes it can acquire these assets in the future. Because without them, this will be the second rate sports station in town, even with Dale and Clem in the morning.

So what happens to Dorian Daniels?

One of the other four stations in the cluster? ("Townsquare Media owns and operates five radio stations and websites in the Bangor market.")

I'm well aware of the cluster on Acme Rd. ;) But where? They are pretty much VT'ed and syndicated to the max IIRC.

Just my two cents. And sorry, I'm too tired to quote everyone, but "second rate" sports station? If you aren't sitting in the Coach House parking lot, WAEI isn't that great of a signal with nothing but syndicated sports. The only bright spot is Rich Kimball's show.

I think 92.9 The Ticket will do just fine with what they have planned. The Pats are nothing to sneeze at and who knows what they will be able to acquire in the future. Could there be a chance that they get the Red Sox? Depends on what foreverknight and the rest of the crew on Broadway have planned. Thanks for keeping us guessing. Just my thinking, but if 103.1 goes to some music format, perhaps Mr. King will want 24/7 progressive. Who knows? I don't.

And the UMaine comment has been responded to properly. Blueberry has turned a once exciting property into a shambles. I can't even remember where hockey is. Kiss? Since I'm not the biggest sports fan, I've kinda lost track. But a couple of Sundays ago, I was scanning the dial and heard a UMaine men's basketball game on 96.3 in Rumford. Couldn't find a local broadcast. So if Townsquare is the least bit aggressive (and it sounds like they are) they might obtain UMaine rights. But do they want to?

As for Dorian Daniels, I hope they find a position for her. I don't know who Craig Colson's replacement will be, but maybe some switching around will be done that way.

Again, this is just rambling speculation. I'm happy to see some, nay, any kind of excitement in Bangor radio. Shake it up!

so this leaves an hole in the AC format in Bangor......Kiss is too modern AC and 93.7 lightened it up about a month ago, which looks really bad now. If they had left it as is, they'd own the AC format to the east of Bangor.

Well, in that case, as soon as they can, UMaine will get their product over to 92.9. That will only leave Red Sox baseball to acquire. Leave the Pats on I 95!

Question: WZON tried the same format. According to King, it lost money for years? So why will this be different? I understand it's a better signal. I just question there is enough interest in local sports to make this viable for any length of time. I hope they make it. I always thought WZON had very high quality programming, especially their live broadcasts. But I'm skeptical.

It's a much BIGGER signal, not just better. We're talking 5kw AM vs. 50kw FM. The interest is there in local sports, Eastern Maine lives, eats and breathes it (Portland is a different story). I'm skeptical too about it, but Townsquare has deeper pockets than Stephen King and can absorb some of the hits such as payroll, programming cost, etc.

Well...technically WEZQ is only 20kw according to the FCC database; with their antenna 240meters (nearly 800') above average terrain. So that could be translated into an effective radiated power of 50kw. I have always had a problem with people using ERPs for coverage...sorta dishonest in my PERSONAL opinion.

BTW The WEZQ tower is atop Black Cat Mountain off Route 9 in Eddington along with the MPBN TV/WMEH-FM 90.9 tower (the tallest of the 3 up there) and the WVII/WFVX tower (the short stubby one) The WEZQ tower is off to the side, the second tallest tower. An easy hike from the end of Black Cat Road..Beautiful view to the north towards Mount Katahdin, and on the south side of the mountain an excellent view towards Down East and Mount Desert Island.. WEZQ does put out a good signal.

For anyone who plans on spending time looking for the trail map (as I just did), you'll have better luck if you search for Black Cap Mountain (FWIW Black Cat Mountain in Androscoggin County is home to 107.5 Frank FM). This isn't so much a correction as an observation, as BDN news articles refer to it as both Black Cap and Black Cat. Guess the T vs. P is a matter of local debate. :)

It's great SK left the format on the air, but disappointing it's AM only.

One wonders if the AAA format will return on the FM?

Well, with days remaining before WZLO switches formats and with even less days before the destruction of the earth, I thought I’d put finger to keyboard to give you my thoughts on what we can expect from WZLO.

If I’m right about any of them, I will be totally surprised.

W-Z-LO – All Cee-Lo, all the time.

W-Zhi-LO – Since WKIT has always done well with Hi-Lo, why not make a station out of it? Problem is, the money will run out quick, then what do you do?

WZoneLibOutlet – Can’t picture this, since it wouldn’t be much of a surprise that the web site is promising. I mean “Surprise! We’re doing what we die before.”

WZoneLiteraryOutlet – Stephen King promotes his latest literary offerings and then has guest DJ’s read from his works.

WZoneLightOrchestra – Returning to the roots of the studio on Broadway, Bobby Russell programs 15 minute newscasts and Mantovani. In a moment of sheer genius, he makes foreverknight host the morning show as he brings Delilah from WEZQ over to WKIT.

W-ZanyLaughOutlet – All Drifty, all the time.

W-Z-Lho-ho-ho – They’re having tooo much fun with Christmas music and decide to keep it year round.

WZLO – ‘Cause Bangor needs another country station and after hearing Bobby Russell all these years, I know it’s his secret dream.

All right, what do I seriously think it’s going to be? I’m going to put my bet on a CHR. Not spread voicetracked thin like 107.3. If anyone can pull it off, the Zone Corp can.

But I’ll be waiting to see and wish them good luck in their new venture.

Always glad to see a new AAA sign on. Much more optimistic about the format in the hands of an independent owner. Good luck to the Loft and Zone Radio.

Been there, done that. King bought 103.1 and put AAA on it 10 years ago, ditched it about 2 years ago for Libtalk (I think it was simulcasting the sports of WZON for a time).

Cheap and easy format, plus I'm sure the music library was still kicking around the studio.
