More changes coming to UF radio stations

Aside from WUFT-FM flipping to News/Talk on August 3rd, the Gainesville Sun is reporting that a few consultants have been hired to restructure and re-organize the other UF properties.

Layoff's are on the way and changes to WRUF-AM and FM are also on the way.

One thing I would like to point out in the article that I found rather interesting...

"Wright said he intends to end the use of university money to pay salaries at the university's public stations, instead making them self-sustaining." Someone clarify, aren't they ALL public stations or are they speaking of WUFT only?

I would hope the state would not pay payroll for Rock104.

Leave Rock 104 alone! It sounds better than most Active Rockers in the entire country. Just because WUFT and WRUF-AM are clunkers, doesn't mean they need to screw around with Rock 104. All the money they are wasting on these genius consultants is a waste. Quit whining about Lex & Terry, great fit on a great radio station.

The other article/editorial in the Gainesville Sun seriously implied that its time to look at Rock 104. Look at it for what? They have the best format, the best stick and have been an icon to Florida radio since 1981.

Geez, can't we leave well enough alone?

As far as I know, only salaries at WUFT-FM and TV are directly paid by University money. WRUF had always sustained itself by paying into a state-run pool and then drawing its expenses from that pool. Technically, the staff are state employees, but the money is not supposed to be mixed.

Prior to WKTK in the late 1980's, coming on the air here, WRUF used to be the top billing station in the market. Joining Alachua and Marion Counties together also took a toll on both WRUFs since neither has great coverage of Ocala. Still, WRUF-Fm has always done very well with the college crowd. If you average out their 12+ numbers over the last 4 books, they come out with a 4.35, which puts them in a tie for around 5th place, which isn't terrible, though it's not awesome either. Given that WRUF is a college radio station and provided that it can continue to make ends meet, I suspect the powers that be will leave it alone.

As for WUFT, I'm not sure how they plan to make it self-sustaining. Compared to WRUF, WUFT has an opulent lifestyle. Budgets and capital are relatively massive, so I'm skeptical about their chances if the University cuts off funding.

Agreed about the money to the consultants... that's an awful lot of dough to be shelling out. I would think if they were seeking some outside assistance, they could find someone willing to help for much less.

Rock104 has been the subject of debate off and on for some time, especially with Lex & Terry. Sure, it's a rock station and that show fits the format, but it's still supposed to be a teaching station and is run by a University. I understand people getting worked up over some of the stunts they pull when you remember who is pumping out that product locally. Personally, I have no problem with it-- but as I said, do understand other people.
