More Changes in Waco

101.3 is now BOB-FM, translating 1590 KLRK/Mexia...instead of 1660 KRZI (ESPN Central Texas). According to Facebook posts, the air staff from MIX 92-9 (KRMX) is moving to 101.3.

Which brings me to the next bit of news...92.9 is expected to flip to country tomorrow (3/1). Stay tuned.

This is one case that raises a question of legality. Specifically, the 101.3 translator's coverage area (60 dBu "service contour") doesn't meet the 25 mile radius or 2mVm provision of the rules for rebroadcast of KLRK. While that coverage was wholly within the daytime 2mVm of KRZI, it lies well outside the similar daytime contour of KLRK. In fact, construction of the new 1590 site isn't complete and they requested an STA to run 650 watts from a single tower (in lieu of the 2500 directional, since it isn't ready). That means the 2mVm of KLRK presently doesn't come close to covering Waco, much less enveloping the coverage area of the 101.3 translator in Moody. Even at 2500 watts it still wouldn't meet the coverage requirement.

They could do it that way, but there's no indication that they have HD in operation.

No HD on KWBT or KRMX. And even if KWBT was in HD, the translator would be way outside the city-grade contour as the move from Mexia to Bellmead has yet to be approved. There does seem to be a lot of prep work taking place at the new KWBT site near the Brazos river. The land has been cleared and it appears the transmitter building has arrived.

Why on earth would ANYONE put ANOTHER country station in Waco?

Because there is only one established player in the format and they dominate the market with an overly broad position due to a lack of serious competition?

As of now, Mix is still on 92.9 and they are encouraging listeners to move to the new Bob FM, where all the Mix airstaff, including the morning show, is going.

Interestingly, David Smoak, the PD of KRZI tweeted this morning that while ESPN gave up the FM signal (the 101.3 translator) to their sister station (Bob FM), they will be getting a new one.

Does this indicate that the ESPN format is going to be carried on 92.9 in place of Mix? Or does it indicate more musical chairs with the over-performing Beat moving from 104.9 to 92.9 and ESPN taking the much weaker 104.9 signal?

929thebeat.com is still available for registration.

It's looking more and more like the rumored Shooter country station on 92.9 was either a ruse or was foiled by the recently launched Kix.

A former colleague of mine just moved up to Waco to program for M&M Broadcasting. Given his track record and connections in the world of Texas country music, I'm guessing he's not there for the Beat or Bob.

The new PD of 92.9 came from KORA/Bryan-College Station. It's gonna be country with a local air staff and decent amount of emphasis on Texas artists.

Kix 106.7 is a joke, just like DOC-FM was a joke. I doubt that anybody at CC or M&M is taking them seriously.

I beleive urban will remain on 104.9. Once their move to Bellmead is complete, KWBT will be sitting pretty. Hearing urban on a weak signal is nothing new in Waco. Prior to KWBT's arrival, Dallas stations KKDA and KBFB would consistently combine for double-digit shares 12+ (thanks to the dairy survey...PPM would've been a different story). That new stick in Bellmead will provide the strongest urban signal in the history of Waco radio.

However, I do think there will be more moving and shaking at M&M. How can BOB support a local air staff on a signal that covers less than half the metro?

They will indeed, when it finally happens. It might seem like just a formality, but as mentioned earlier the move still hasn't been approved. It's been over two years now, and the application remains on the "blocked minor change" list, with the problem being described as "other hold." So what's really going on here?

I suspect it's one of several holds the FCC has placed on FM allotment changes. They're rethinking their move-in policy and are no longer rubber stamping what were once easy approvals. They also placed a hold on an allotment shuffling in the Des Moines area.

Still waiting for the flip on 92.9. The moniker will be 92-9 Shooter FM, Young Guns and Legends.

Terry Hunt - mornings
Chris Austin (PD) - Middays
Billy Ray - PM Drive

All Texas music at night (like KVET/Austin)...not sure who is hosting.
