I heard through a reliable source that Clearchannel has issued an order to all it's stations to cut one full-time staffer, by the end of the year.

Nice way of saying Merry Christmas..

That's been the rumbling for a while...word is that sales are in the crapper!!!! and with the move to go private coming soon and the Frequency Radio deal dead or at the very least in the land of eternal hold...something has to give... The more important question is...when is the bleeding going to stop. My heart goes out to those employees in the middle.

"Reliable source"? Is Roger whatsisname back in business? Please don't spread unfounded rumors... it does no good to the "employees in the middle."

I would expect it in Cleveland. A friend in Dallas got his walking papers, and the clusters in western Ohio have been absolutely mauled. Sad.

Hey Sonosational18...none of us like this but it's not our doing...it's a fact of life...the trades have been reporting the cuts for months and many employees have experienced it first hand. This mornings reports are saying 8 to 10% more cuts when CC goes private. Unfortunatly..it's not a rumor!

An 18 year vet at KDGE/Dallas was sent walking last week.

CC Akron cut it's news director loose.

Watch AllAccess and start counting the "exits" at CC stations.

Historically CC cuts employees every November and June/July. I worked for CC for 11 years... I know of what I speak.

No, that would be "Word is..." - and Good ol' Roger Brown does, well, whatever HE does for the Lorain Journal/Lake County News-Herald.

They aren't rumors. Just think of Valentine's Day, 2001 and the decimating of WMJI on that day. They can let go of talent (whatever's left of it, even Kat Jackson) whenever they need to. Christmastime fits the bill perfectly.

Among CC's Akron cluster, not only did they lose ND Tom Duresky, but WHLO-AM and WARF-AM just lost PD Jerry Mullins. Fortunately it's not as dire as was first thought, but I'd doubt that his position will be filled immediantly, if at all...

if you're gonna write about stuff get it right......

tom was replaced by michael kelly.......and the pd left because of a family health crisis......

ya know..things are bad enough this time of year for cc employees without all the b.s. and speculation....

it shows a great lack of consideration for those people...even if you don't like CC.....the folks who work there deserve your respect...

soapbox off

Mnor point:

KHKS will be VTing Mids and LATE Nights (10P-2A), not Nights (6P-10P).

Northeast Ohio gets hit...Re: More Clearchannel cuts?

Northeast Ohio gets hit. From All Access:

Youngstown Blues

Similar multiple staff cuts have impacted CLEAR CHANNEL/YOUNGSTOWN. News WKBN-AM, afternoon-drive co-host CASEY MALONE, Oldies WBBG middayer JERRY GODDARD and cluster engineer MIKE HEIM are all budge-cut victims. Their duties will be absorbed by others on staff.

They also had 17 cuts in Detroit today.

I would not be surprised if there WERE cuts. But at this point, it's purely speculation and should be identified as such. What gets me is the proverbial "highly placed unnamed inside source" that's supposedly quoted who often turns out to be either the janitor or just a figment of someone's imagination. If there are cuts being planned I doubt that the people who are privvy to that information telling others who should not be and posting it on BB's and blogs. Speculation.... no problem.... we do that all the time. Speculation masquerading as fact, that's where I have the problem.

True and true. Tom Duresky left weeks before this happened, and Micheal Kelly (formerly WTAM's weekend overnight anchor) most recently a VT'ed traffic anchor for WMVX-and-God-knows-who scooted over to WHLO. (Is Micheal still in Oaktree?)

And Jerry Mullins left AFTER his father recovered from a serious health scare, no doubt thinking of his family first. Can't blame him... it would be insane not to feel that way. I wish him the best.

I'm just saying... don't instantly assume stuff like CC's bloodletting had NO bearing on their decisions at all. They made up their minds way before I commented on it here, and before you did and Chuck did and 74WIXYGrad did. CC made the decision to go private months ago, the cutbacks had to have been in the works as well, even with a credit crisis/dollar deflation/recession possiblity now looming large.

But... it is what it is. They did leave, and for their timing coinciding with the news at hand, account for part of the apparent 'bloodbath' at CC (in Detroit, that would apply, no?)

Is anti- any large company really a bad thing? Just look what wonderful things Wal-Mart has done to the nation's economy. Ask the Hoover Company.

Clearchannel has done wonderful things for the industry of radio. ::)

The fact that they wait until around Thanksgiving and Christmas to do their "budget cuts" shows how much they care about employees and their families. "Thanks for all the hard work. Merry Christmas. You're fired."

Still the local CC kool aid drinkers love to defend them and pretend it is a great company to work for. Funny how they stay away from this topic. Too busy getting their T&R's ready?

I would be very surprised if the Clearchnnel slasher overlooks the dead weight (loosely known as "management") over at Freedom Ave and Joke Tree Blvd.

For what it's worth, here's a link to the latest post on John Gorman's blog where he touches upon this very subject.

http://gormanmediablog.blogspot.com/2007/11/radio-is-it-really-that-bad-or-is-it.html

IMHO, it's not worth much coming from Gorman. He's way out of the loop and has an anti- any large company agenda.

I disagree. G-Man has worked for quite a few large corporations, as well as small. I don't think he's out of the loop at all. His writing doesn't sound like he's out of it.

I can say that I would work for Gorman again. He gets it. He gets what radio should be. And more importantly he wins with his philosophies.

And I think John Gorman is still doing consulting work for various stations around the country. I would work for him in a heartbeat also. :)
