More Cumu-less cuts in Charleston

Heard Rocky D. is also out after, what, 12 years at WTMA?

On another note, and I don't know if this is true, but I heard a rumor that there is a Randall and Mortimer Duke-style bet going on between Cumulus and Clear Channel - the company who owns and continually operates the most stations with the least personnel wins 1$ from the other company.

just check WTMA.com and Clark Howard is now going to be on during Rocky's slot!
This is a sad day and I hope nothing but bad things for these bastards!
Hopefully someone will pick up Rocky's show, Apex if you are reading this take 1390 talk and go local based.
Pick up Richard Todd from WTMA and give us a better choice in talk radio!

I wish we had the Clark Howard show here in Columbia, out of WSB in ATL. He is great and gives great advice on practical financial matters.

You're right, Clark is great...and a great guy. I worked with him when I worked in Atlanta in 2000-2001. He lives what he preaches, too. Someone doesn't have to have a complete stock portfolio to gleen practical information, either. It's useful info for the common man, IMHO, plus, his advice doesn't descend into technical gobbledeegook. Even a dumbass like me can understand what he's saying.

Correct. WSPO is a waste of a sports station now. They don't do any local stuff, and barely have any presence in the community. Except for Saturday mornings, all their programming is off the Fox Sports bird. The worst decision they made was putting Paul Finebaum on afternoons. Few people listen to his show.

They even dropped their FM simulcast and made it Spanish.

WTMA is not very good really anymore, with rip and read news all day from the newspaper. Sad that Rocky D has to be let go after a decade.

WSPO could be a news/talk station, with local mornings, a syndicated show 9-12, Jim Rome, local afternoons and then sports talk at night. Would make sense. The new management took a station with promise (one time had two local shows), and basically cut it to nothing. They should have kept the FM simulcast.

Charleston is one of the worst AM markets in the country. Last full rating book, WTMA was the first AM, in 15th place.

Here is the official release from AllAccess:

LHSH you can have Clark anytime you want him just stream his show.
as for Rocky it is sad that he was replaced by Clark Howard.
don't you even try to tell me replacing a local show with that is a good thing.
Cumulus should not have bought these stations if tey cannot aford to run them.
and why the heck is the wolf still doing country?

I am glad to see that WCBD has been reporting on Rocky and the morning show from z93 getting let go.
Seems to be a lot of upset radio listeners here in Charleston.
Not sure if there is anything anyone can do as Cumulus does not seem to care about listeners, but maybe the anger will get these folks back on the radio on other stations.

Re: AM's in Charleston - actually, in quite a few smaller/medium sized markets, that's the case - up here in Greenville, I can't think of ANY AM that even shows up! The AM talk stations are on FM so I don't really know how important they are.

when was he fired? listened to him today and he was talking up future shows.
hoping this is not true!

Thats been their MO (Cumulus)
It seems you get released as soon as youre done with your show. No warning. No advance notice. No goodbyes

No offense, but I don't think that's the exclusive M.O. of Cumulus or any other broadcast entity. I'm not as familiar with the Charleston market as I am with the rest of South Carolina's markets, so I don't know Rocky and/or any of the others who got let go in Charleston, nor do I like it when any on air talent gets the "boot"(unless he or she has it coming), but it's a fairly common practice to let a talent go when it suits the employer rather than the employee...even in cases of the employee giving his or her notice. The reasoning is to prevent said employee from turning the airwaves into a "bully pulpit" and airing any grievances they may have with the employer.

You know it's funny you mention that because I just recently observed that very phenomenon by someone who has used it before to retain his/her job. Very interesting dynamic when the employer, while employing an employee, encourages multi-media interaction and cultivation, but, when no longer employing that employee, they can no longer control what it said or conveyed by non broadcast means. We live in a very, VERY different time. Another reason to adapt and overcome...or get out of the biz.

in this case thank God for social media.
it has gotten the word out about Rocky and Charleston is angry.
Cumulus could not just let it ride off in to the sunset.
Amazing what happens when the people have a voice.
