More East Alabama Changes

WTXO in Ashland has now split off of its simulcast with WFXO (105.9) and is now doing urban as "The Beat Jamz 98.3". 105.9 is still doing rock, but has picked up the longtime WKLS calls from Atlanta's former Project 96.1/96 Rock.

98.3 has always had some form of Urban programming on parts of Sundays. That has expanded to all of Sunday recently but the rest of the week is still Rock.

I had found the TuneIn listing about an hr ago. I was under the belief that the listing originally listed WTXO as rock. Does the listing change on Sundays and revert back at some point for the rest of the week? ???

I just changed my website in the last few days to reflect this. I can't find any recent references to 98.3 still being rock or still simulcasting WKLS, which bills itself as a Gadsden rock station with just the 105.9 frequency. rock983.net, the old website, redirects to rock1059.net. The only reference on the station site I can find to the other frequency is on the 'why advertise with us' page.

What's going on?

It may have been 98.3 The Beat out of Columbus, GA. Many nights I hear a mix of them and Rock 98.3 in the LaFayette area. I heard Rock 98.3 at about 0430 Saturday morning.

I just checked the OTA signal. 98.3 is indeed still airing rock. I didn't hear a call sign given at the TOH, but the station is identifying itself as "Rock 105.9". However, the TuneIn listing still shows WTXO doing urban as "Anniston and Talledega's #1 station for Hip Hop and R&B". Even more bizarre...I heard the stream on TuneIn a few minutes ago, and the stream was still airing urban and ID'ed as "WTXO, 98.3 FM Ashland", followed by "WZZX 780 AM, Lineville". There was a mention of the station website: thebeatjamz.com. It lists the station as "98.3, WTXO FM" at the top of the index page.

Could this be an HD station for WTXO maybe...or a format change for 98.3 that is still in the works?

This may be the station that "DJ Steen"/Justin formerly of WTDR launched after leaving there in August. He is a hip-hop DJ who was planning on launching a station in that area, and I beleieve his website was the one you guys keep referring to.

DJ Steen has been on radio stations spinning or hosting shows on stations like: WHOG The Hog 1120 AM, 95.7 Jamz, Alabama 810, WTDR Thunder 92.7 FM, WANA 1490 The Ticket, WJSX TV 24, The Big Station WKXN, and WEUP 103.1. DJ Steen is also currently the Program Director for WGBZ The Beat on 104.3, 99.1 and 1490, along with the Production Director for FNN-The Friday Night Network, and Imaging producer for WTDR Thunder 92.7 FM. He also is the owner and ceo of DJ Steen Ent.
Most recently, DJ Steen helped launch the first ever FM Hip Hop and RnB radio station in Anniston/Oxford, AL area. With his vast expertise in programming and built connections from his past, Steen bought to Anniston, AL one of the nations best sounding radio stations of its kind.
Now DJ Steen is on The All New The Beat Jamz. You can catch DJ Steen live on air Monday thru Friday from 3pm to 7pm on The Beat. You can also catch him spinning live at Clubs on any given night in the Alabama area. Look out for Steen’s Video Mixtapes to hit the streets next and for the launch of Video Spinz TV.

Certainly a mystery, this. We have this DJ whose promotional materials make it sound like 98.3 is urban full time, but passtheword's dial check proves otherwise. I guess it's possible the urban is on an HD subchannel but that would be a first for that area. I don't think there's any HD at all up in east Alabama and certainly none listed on the all-but-abandoned hdradio website.

98.3 Ashland is listing with the FCC as WFXO not WTXO. I'm not familiar with this station, so is this a change? thebeatjamz.com shows the logo, and it has WTXO as well???

The live stream is working and does appear to be playing urban 24/7, but from what I've heard so far from listening (and its only been for about 20 minutes) the drops aren't saying frequency or anything in reference to the area it is servicing except for a quick news and weather break that was local news stories and weather. And by the way, it is very strange to me that a rock station would do urban on Sundays to begin with.

I was confused when I read your post about the calls. I thought 98.3 was WTXO, and 105.9 was (up until recently) WFXO. According to the FCC site, 98.3 was in fact WTXO, but picked up the WFXO calls on 10/8, presumably at the same time 105.9 became WKLS.

I didn't listen to the stream for any length of time, either, but given what you said, there must be only a mention of the 98.3 frequency and WTXO calls at the top of the hour (which aren't even 98.3's calls anymore). The stream did mention WZZX at 780 during the "station ID".. Anyone know if WZZX is doing urban?

WZZX had came back on the air sometime last year doing classic R&B, but has been silent every time I have checked in recently. I was driving through Ashland one night a couple weeks back, and did hear what sounded like a dead carrier on 780, though.

I didn't listen to the feed long enough to hear a top of the hour legal ID, but the logo on the website does show 780 am on it as well. Not saying that it was, but the feed sounded satellite fed at times though. It had each song name and artist IDed at the end of each song like WAY FM does (if you've ever listen to them you'll know what I'm talking about).

I caught it on 98.3 riding from Birmingham to Atlanta this Sunday. Lots of syndicated shows. What happened to the other Urban station in Anniston, i think WGBZ THE BEAT?

I can confirm that AM 780 WZZX is on the air... dead air, though. I drove through yesterday afternoon and heard the silent carrier in Talladega, Ashland, and Wadley. It seems like they have been broadcasting in sign language for some time, now... ;D
