More-FM HD2: The '90s Channel

OK, that was just blatant clickbait.

I know some people enjoy HD sides and others hate them with an inexplicable white-hot intensity. But the folks at 101.1 seem pretty dedicated to their HD2. (They certainly seem dedicated this year to not flipping it to the usual Christmas music preview. haha.) Feels though like their '80s format is fairly burnt to a crisp at this point. And even though it's just an HD2, it competes (to whatever extent it can) with now-sister WOGL. (No on plays more '80s? Really?)

Doesn't a '90s format seem more in-line with the audience More-FM is aiming for these days? And I think it would be a lot more fun since Pop music fractured like so many broken bones during the 1990s. They could call it Trainwreck 101.1 HD2. haha. And you know what? I'd probably listen to it every damn day.

There's no rule that an HD2 has to compliment the HD1's format. 97.5 HD2 is Classical. lol

As for shifting from the 80s... so few people are listening to WBEB-HD2, that it really doesn't matter if they're playing all 80s while WOGL screams "NO ONE PLAYS MORE 80s!" 99.5% (my estimate, pulled out of my butt) of WOGL listeners don't know WBEB-HD2 exists. I personally wouldn't mind a 90s channel, but to corporate, there's no real reason to change it.

A '90s channel would be great. Of course, if what Entercom has done in NYC is any indication, they might just change it to a simulcast of WOGL or WTDY.

there's no real reason to change it.

But if they're just keeping as this stale '80s format, there's no real reason to keep it either. They must think there's some value. We've all heard the songs they play a katrillion times. I mean, for that matter, just turn it off. Seems like they have some interest in keeping it on. I'm just saying, keep it on and make it something more fun...and something that complements (rule or not) their regular format. They know it's being listened to mostly by radio geeks and secondly by More FM listeners who happened into buying a car that came equipped with HD radio.

Why exactly is WPEN's HD2 classical? Of all things?

Honestly, perhaps a comedy format on WPEN HD2, or hell keep the classical for all I care, and put something like "Funny 97.5" on HD3. You could probably get away with a tad more on an obscure HD3 channel than a main air channel.

Is the Classical being fed to a translator anywhere? Other than for that purpose, it feels like many stations put whatever they want on their side-channels with no real thought about any impact on the community. The earlier example being: Entercom aiming to have an '80s-based Classic Hits station in the market where they also have an All '80s HD2.

Other side-channels do seem thoughtful, of course. Like having KYW on 94.1 HD2 and maintaining a Smooth Jazz presence on a 106.1 side (if it's still there). But if the magical HD machine overheated today, I don't think either Entercom or iHeart would put buying a new one at the top of their to-do list. ;)
