More from Clear Channel

With the massive layoffs swirling around Clear Channel, the company's CEO John Hogan apparently became confused and fired himself. When he realized his mistake several hours later, he re-hired himself at twice his original salary.

Twice his salary, does this mean Hogan will start paying for his own call girls?

Did Hogan remember to tell that third party to sell the call options he bought on Clear Channel the day before the LBO rumor leaked out?

I guess your name has to be Martha Stewart to get in trouble for something like that.

cumulus looking to purchase clear channel atlanta assets. geez, how much would that suck? they run everything into the ground and have no clue what good radio is, or they just are so pre occupied with the fiscal.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that Greed -- for lack of a better word -- is GOOD. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed -- you mark my words -- will not only save Clear Channel Radio, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.

Where did you hear this? I could see the Dickey clan going for these stations, but I haven't heard anything about this.

Can't anyone say anything positive about Clear Channel? Oh, never mind. :-X

Clear Channel has made many people wealthy. OldGringo, one of the regular posters, loves Clear Channel and all the success it brought him. Clear Channel protects its corporate weasels. No corporate weasels have been harmed in the recent staff reductions. There, I have said something positive about those rotten bast***ds who ruined radio. That might be my good deed for the week.

I'll step up and say somethin' nice about ClearChannel!
I want to thank ClearChannel for making my house payment and 1/2 the Van payment for the last 6 years. For five of those years I worked for Mike Lawing, Director of Engineering for Atlanta. One of the nicest folks I've ever known.....he always treated me well. And also the other guys, Jim Gantner and Charlie Herald.....great engineers and team players. I'm fortunate to have been associated with such a great group of engineers!
The current manager of the group of stations I work for told me 1 year ago this month that I would not fit into the new plans for the station. But he said he would give me some time to make other arrangements. (The engineer for his group of stations will take over at some point.) He could have just blown me out.....no skin off his nose....but he has tried to make it as painless as possible for me.
You hear all the ClearChannel horror stories, and I'm sure there are many, but I have had nothing but good experience with these guys. They have always treated me well and with respect.
So just how DO you operate 1200 stations....huh? Where is the "genius" who knows all about fixing broken management on this magnitude?
On this board?
NOT!!!

You don't. At least, not very well. And that's the problem.

We were, IMHO, much better off when the limit was 7 of each, nationally. 7 AM, 7 FM, 7 TV. And the contours of the stations you owned in one market couldn't overlap those of stations you owned of the same service from another market.

Back then the equipment cost more, automation barely existed, all programming was local, programming was better overall than it is today. Even small town stations had news departments and local personalities. And somehow, stations made money.

So what's the difference today? Corporate greed.

Didn't radio get a much smaller slice of the overall advertising pie back then? Economies of scale allowed radio to increase the percentage of ad dollars spent on radio instead of print or TV.

Spotload before 1994 at the station i worked at was 8 spots in afternoon drive.. in 2000 is was 14. Sure, more money came in, went out to pay San Antonio, while listenership went down.

I agree 100% on the ownership limit!
In retrospect, the deregulation of broadcast was one of the worst blunders in the history of our nation. Never has so much power been placed(by government fiat) in the hands of so few!
The good news is the internet!! In the not so distant future we will have connectivity in the mobile enviroment.....and the monopoly will be over. Choices will be unlimited.....and hopefully unregulated/uncensored by Mr. Big Brother.
Already, the internet has changed the way many of us get news. Ratings are crumbling for the networks - CNN/Fox,Drudge etc. are growing (Drudge got 20+million hits election night)The internet is going to do to the entertainment industry(radio included) just what it has already done with the information/news industry.
The looming question.....will the Democrats, with Hillary as Prez, allow this historical paradigm shift? Their media owning, liberal, buddies aren't going down without a fight. I see government meddling, and possible control, as a real possibility.
What are your predictions?
And how will this affect Q100?
