"THE MOST STORIED FRANCHISE ON EARTH IS BACK IN WESTERN NEW YORK, EXCLUSIVELY ON WECK 1230!
In 2009 The New York Yankees will be moving into their brand new stadium in the Bronx, and are on a mission to get back to the World Series. The Yankees off-season acquisitions, C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Mark Texiera have been added to an already-impressive line-up including Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, Joba Chamberlain and, of course, The Captain: Derek Jeter."

Listen for New York Yankees baseball, beginning Opening Day 2009 on Hometown 1230 WECK.

Still working out the schedule, but we plan to air "almost every game." The occasional Mon-Fri day game may get pre-empted.

Savage has already heard this rant, so he's excused...Mike Doyle, too ;)

The Yankees will certainly bring some additional visibility to WECK, and that's surely a good thing - but I'm thinking that the "conventional wisdom" about the MLB fan base in western New York has shifted in recent years in a way that local media haven't yet picked up on. Take an informal survey of what hats and jerseys the crowd is wearing at a Red Wings game in recent years, at least, and you'll see as much Red Sox gear as Yankees gear, maybe more. I've been seeing this at Amerks games, too, and I suspect it's probably as true in Buffalo as it is in Rochester.

And while the Yankees' flagship on 880 booms into western New York at night, the Sox' flagship, WRKO 680, can't be heard here at all - and WTIC can be a tough catch some nights, too.

So who'll be the first to tap into this fiercely loyal niche and pick up some Sox games out here, instead of being locked into the increasingly outdated assumption that anyone following major-league baseball in western New York must, by default, be a Yankees fan?

That's great! The stations here in Rochester only carry the weekend games or games that don't conflict with the Red Wings' schedule.

Real glad to hear this news! As I drive during the afternoons, it will be great to listen to a real game instead of drivvel on sports radio.
As far as the fan base- I can say that I grew up with the Yankees... and still dislike the Red Sox. Matter of fact, I only know 1 Red Sox fan, though there might be 2 or 3 more....

This is great news to me. The only reason I have XM radio is because GR dropped the Yanks a few years ago, and I have to listen to them! Baseball is by far the best game to listen to on the radio.

I was wondering why Brad was going to be shifting hours (other than figuring it was to replace O'Reilly). I wasn't happy about that because I wouldn't have anything to listen to at night. (And, I'm actually a fan of Schopp and the Bulldog, so now I'll have to decide which to listen to).

If a were WECK, i would stop spending so much time proting on the station on this board, and actually do some real promotion in the marketplace, so listeners can actually know it exists.

If a what were WECK? And, BTW, what's proting on the station? Is that a hip-hop artist? :)

Hey buddy, got any ideas on just how they might do that? I'm sure Tom Schuh would love to hear your suggestions! Why don't you help them out?

If the station were mine, it would be Nostalgia Timeless format. Simple. This was the stations identity for many years, and it worked. Since it is not, there are alot of ways you can promote Yankees, albiet that if it were such great programming, it should already of been taken by another station. You can do trade with outside medias to promote, tie in to local baseball events and passionate Yankees fans, free internet based stuff, social networking, direct mailings, anything! Those are some suggestions. It is not that hard to think out of the box. Sorry for the spelling errors in the previous post.

Some stations try to think and program out of the box and "experts" on the message boards devour it like maggots and cast it aside like yesterday's garbage.

Damn those experts on the message boards, huh, Joe!

I'm no expert but I agree with that. However nobody seems to want those numbers (over 50 crowd). We keep hearing agencies won't buy those demographics. I keep wondering why stations can't sell direct to business? They used to do it all the time.

Music you can't get on FM just might catch on again.

The only way WECK will ever survive in today's radio climate is to go back to a music format. The Music of Your Life format would be perfect and would probably get them some Arbitron numbers. What they're doing now is just bad radio.

No Gary he needs to be sent to the hospital for an evaluation. He's obviously not right mentally. He's a bigger menace to our business than any of the big corporations are.
