More Hooey from Ibiquity

"More than eight out of ten HD Radio receivers sold since the digital radio technology began rolling out have come in dashboards. That’s according to new sales data released by iBiquity, which says 10 of the 12 million units in use are either factory-installed in new cars or auto aftermarket units. One-third drove off dealer lots in the past year."

" Cume has grown by more than 60% to about three million listeners in the average week."

But "Even so, new research from Arbitron and Edison Research released this week found just 3% of adults (18+) had listened to an HD Radio receiver in a vehicle in the past month."

That would still be be 270,000 listeners..... now do we believe that? Or does that include the 1 time most owners have tried to shut off the buzz in the menu to avoid dropouts?

Note, too, that the IR article acknowledges the importance of analog translators in increasing the AQH for HD-2’s and -3’s. They note that Arbitron thinks that ruse has increased the listenership of those “stations” by 90 percent.

I think they’re drastically underestimating the effect of the translators. Here’s my estimate of the percentage of OTA listeners (not online listeners) who are listening to HD-2's and -3's via analog translators:

99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 percent!!!

Struble continues to hype the AVAILABILITY of HD Radio, lever the LISTENING to HD Radio because there's hardly any. Most HD Radios were acquired inadvertently in new vehicles -- hardly ever by conscious choice. Then the inadvertent fun begins. It's kind of like buying a new computer with a pre-installed virus or a nice bowl of lobster bisque with a cockroach garnish -- mmmm . . .

That means that listeners like the content, they just don't want to buy new radios to hear it.

That's the case for satellite and AM/FM too. No one is electing to install radios in cars any more. Those days are done.

A new computer with a pre-installed virus, haha!
