More Interesting Than The Super Bowl?

While most fans are picking the Pats this weekend, Nurse Jeff and I are betting KFNN blows by another local sunset on Friday (2/01) and fails to power down at 6:15pm! Their track record aint too good on that switch from 22kw to 100 watts at night. Most of the time they're a good hour to hour and a half late on reducing power. Be on the lookout for our 1976 Gremlin Levi's Special in downtown Mesa around sunset this Friday to monitor 15~Ten. The Nurse and I've always thought it a little strange that KFNN doesn't put much of a signal (if any) into their COL at night! Anyone wanna bet against the Buckeye Media Hut?

what a waste of a post.. find something else to comment on.

I care! If there was no respect for regulation, we would have only 2 or 3 stations to listen to, those with the biggest stick! And they could be Mexican stations at that. No more picking up KNX or KGO. Castro could dominate radio in Florida. Think of all the jobs in radio that would be lost.

Without rules and regulations, we would not have the variety of listening opportunities.

KFNX has some serious signal problems. Its transmitter limps along, and its signal belies its claimed power level. Even at 22 kw, the signal should be much better than it is. (I know, I've taken field readings out of curiosity.) There has to be a fundamental problem, like maybe its antenna ground system is "shot." I dunno, but with its signal troubles, and night time skywave interference, I think most of us recognize that KFNX's technical operation reveals an unending tale of woe.

Nurse Jeff and I are referring to KFNN 15~Ten, not KFNX 11~Hundred. We could exhaust our fingers writing about KFNX's numerous technical violations. If Lumberyard 14~Forty can cut the carrier with a lamp timer at local sunset, why can't KFNN and KFNX cut their power?

Hmm. We've got a poster using a screen name that goes over most reader's heads..stressing over power levels on just above
pirate level stations in one of the most over radioed market in America.

Here's a clue, if the FCC doesn't care, take this discussion to the outside and battle it out.

I must say that generally the good doctor has pretty good posts, whether I agree with them or not. Unfortunately, this is one of the handful of absolutely worthless discussions that tends to linger around here.

Let's face it, KFNN has no listeners--KFNN's management doesn't care about power outpout, nor do the people at KFNX, KAZG or any other local radio stations that emit as much power as a 1985 Sharp(TM) Convection/Microwave oven. The other station's in Phoenix/surrounding markets don't really care, or if they do they've already filed a complaint with the FCC. The FCC is far too busy worried about if someone used a gratuitous synonym for 'boobies' so that they can show how mighty the first amendment really isn't. Therefore, the FCC doesn't care.. so I must ask, if the FCC doesn't care, if the stations in Phoenix and surrounding markets don't care (based upon their actions) and if only the same three or four people post in these threads are a demonstration of how few of us on this board care, then why does this keep getting brought up? Why should any of us care?

And, sadly, the contents of the 1985 Sharp (TM) Convection/Microwave oven are more exciting than what any of these offending stations has to offer. :D

It's kinda like Brown Eyed Girl....you're tired of hearing it, but it keeps gettin' played! Now either settle down, or Nurse Jeff and I'll get the Old Gringo to pontificate on high end AM's running unauthorized power at night.

...do you remember when we used to sing - sha la la la la la, ad-nauseum :p :p :p

Brown-Eyed Girl is a proven hit..this subject is a proven
dud.

Gremlin...Nurse..good lord.

Here's a clue for you all...the walrus was Paul.

Also for the clueless, the discussion is relevant to the PHX radio board.

It's about two PHX-market AMs (yeah, Mesa and even Cave Creek COLs
count) playing fast 'n' loose with power settings, and an FCC that
doesn't care.

And as has been said before, if you don't have an interest in a thread,
don't read it. Not to be confused with: "If you don't want it heard on
KTKT News, don't let it happen." (Speaking of going over most readers'
heads...)

Maybe ABQ isn't over-radioed enough. ;)

I hope to be back later in this broadcast to report on how our two
illegal power aliens did at sunset on this first day of February.

This is relevant for the two posters who have angst over the power situation with these AM's.
Relevant as to the whole board..uh..okay.

Waiting for 6:15pm (February sign-off or power/pattern change)...

At 6:07, Kay-Fenix 1100 had already dropped power  (amazing, ain't it?)
and Lumberyard 1440 was already off the air. I guess KAZG didn't realize
it's February, although when you're at the mercy of Gumpdusky's lamptimer...

Kay-Funn 1510 at 6:07 was getting stepped on pretty bad but still had
a listenable signal (about 40-50% up the meter on the Sangean 909).
This was still the same at 6:25 so it's probable they hadn't reduced to
100 watts at or about 6:15, as their night pattern is a non-player in
the 'Tuke (hardly registering on the meter).

Nurse Jeff and I clocked the change around 6:58pm while Gary K was saying his good-byes (this guy is as down as Cramer is over the top). Signal was pretty strong up until that time with a bunch of skywave garbage during the pauses. With local sunset at 6:15pm, K-Fun 15~Ten stole almost 45 extra minutes before powering down to their assigned 100 watts.
