Radio & Records just reported on their website today(April 17th) that they have officially transistioned to Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop today under the consultancy of veteran programmer Steve Hegwood and plans to refocus the station towards 18-34 African-americans, which may explain the reason for its recent tweak from a Hip-Hop heavy Rhythmic direction.

Hmmm...Steve Hegwood. One has to wonder if he's interested in taking KDAY/KDAI off Styles' hands. After all, he does owns a couple of radio stations even though one of them went off the air in New Orleans.

You mean the radio stations he bankrupted?

He can't afford Albany, Georgia; let alone Los Angeles.<P ID="signature">______________

You know this just aint gonna work in the long run.
Their drowning and this is the first sign.

Wonder if the Baka Boyz will remain?

Maybe not.

The 93.5 signals are strong in the areas of the market that are high Black population, as well as young Hispanics. Going more mainstream Urban may be just the ticket.

It just doesn't sound right with the Baka Boyz throwing in old disco songs.

Tweaking the station's format is reminicient of other stations which eventually dump the format altogether (Pirate Radio 100.3 and B-100 comes to mind).

Especially with 100.3 going in a more urban ac direction.

They have returned to using the positioning statement "Hip Hop Today and Back in the Day" which disappeared a few weeks back. At least they dropped the stupid "All Day, Every Day" positioning statement they have used the last few weeks which I was happy to criticize and was flamed for doing. That was one awful format. So who was right?

This won't work. Frankie Ross tried going up against "The Beat" with Rhythm 102.3 KJLH as a mainstream urban and failed. This signal isn't as good as KJLH's and the black population is less now in L.A. than it was 13 years ago. And you still have "The Beat" and its full market signal to contend with.

Interestingly, I listened to their morning show today (small timers). Not one call put on the air from South (Central) Los Angeles or that general surrounding area.

^ Completely agree with you. Also with The Beat headed to a more Urban AC
approach, going Urban just may work in KDAY's favor.

The Beat is not headed Urban AC.

More changes at KDAY! Seems like it's a step down, but word at the end of the week was that former Market Manager for Clear Channel and KIIS GM Roy Laughlin would be marketing manager at the Magic Broadcasting-Styles cluster for Southern California that includes KDAY, KDAI, and KWIE. At least that was the word from LA Radio. Anyone have any idea what he'll do besides trying to boost sales. He always seemed to be involved with programming, so it's going to get interesting.
