More KYW changes

I tuned in on the way to work at 8:30. Brandon Brooks and Carol McKenzie were co-anchoring. Sports was at 8:38. Didn't get to listen to much more.

The co-anchoring was NOT like it was in the Harry Donahue days when he did sports and introduced various elements like traffic and weather, but left nearly all the news-reading to the second anchor. This morning, Brandon and Carol were even alternating sentences leading into a live or recorded report.

I did a quick look at their website this morning. No note about the changes. I'd think changing something that has been so established such as sports at :15 and :45 would merit a note online to listeners would know where to find their favorites.

More changes: Traffic and Weather are both aired back to back on the 2's now. I don't mind it so much except the CBS 3 meteorologist presenting the weather no longer says who they are, even during times when it's taped (I know it's Kate Bilo tonight -- although Kim Glovas actually introduced her as Lauren Casey the first time).

Sports seems to be at :08/:38 now, with the :15/:45 timeslot replaced with "3 things to know." That's preceded by the anchor and editor's desk person being introduced BEFORE the KYW jingle, which is also strange.

Speaking of jingles, I must admit the top/bottom of the hour jingle that was introduced a month or so ago is poorly edited too. All it is is the beginning of the Reporter's Roundup music, the KYW jingle from 2016, and (I think) part of the old Breakfast Briefing soundtrack clashed together. None of it even blends at all.

Lastly, does Reporters' Roundup no longer go to Liberty Place the first Friday of the month? I haven't heard Nikazy mention this at the end of the show over the last week like he has been. Seems a bit disappointing they'd discontinue a longtime tradition if they did.

Looks and sounds like Silverman is determined to have fingerprints covering KYW from stem to stern.

At least Rewind hasn't been touched (other than being moved from right before the 6:52a traffic and transit to right after same.

Speaking of wheels and slightly OT, when does WCBS-AM do sports nowadays (if they still do)?

Will all of this make KYW sound fresher? Has WCBS-AM taken on a fresher sound with the new music and wheel changes?

The morning weather gal Fralinger is horrible. Their news reporting is horrible. The fact that they're so cheap as to not subscribe to Accuweather is ...I really miss Elliot Abrams and his soliloquies .

OMG, I had forgotten about Elliot Abrams entertaining us that way! It's been about 6 years since I had to drive for work (I take the subway now) so I haven't really had a lot of chances to listen to KYW recently. I will say that when I have, the on-air product certainly sounded "cheaper" than it had ever been. I remember noting that almost every recorded report sounded like it was being played over the phone and the end would be clipped, sometimes before the reporter was done speaking. Hopefully, they've improved that. But I can't really blame them for divorcing AccuWeather. They had a weather partner in sister CBS3. (And AccuWeather's forecasts are kinda dubious, IMO.)

All of that aside, "horrible" is a pretty broad stroke of the brush. What in your opinion is wrong with the news reporting?

Perhaps that statement was too harsh. . I suppose I miss guys like Dick Covington, Vince Lee, Harry Donahue , Sandy Starobin and a gal who worked there for a few years recently, who also was very listenable. I do like Carol McKenzie too along with Wally Kennedy, who was fantastic on WPHT.

Elliott Abrams is in the broadcast HOF. I remember one June around midday he waxed eloquently about a deep blue sky on a sunny day with the shadows as dark as the dusk. I got home the next hour, waited and recorded it. Now if I could only find it.

I don't mind the CBS 3 weather people as much as the traffic team. Ever since early 2017 when CBS/Entercom parted ways with TTN, they picked horrible personalities. Stevie Reese and Justin Drabick can NOT do traffic, at least during busy times like weekdays. Studdering, mumbling, constantly trying to catch their breath (especially Drabick). There are some personalities that cannot do unscripted live reports like traffic, and they are one of them. Others like Stephanie Humphrey and Jim Hubmaster, and of course Sam Clover, do a much better job at it.

Also is it me or has KYW canned Reporters' Roundup? Suzanne Monahan did a regular news hour from 12-1pm, with Nikazy hopping on at the top of the hour at 1:00 (he usually does the :30 spot from 12:30-4).

What traffic service does KYW use now?

AccuWeather is available on barter, doesn't cost them much of anything other than about 4 minutes of inventory a week.

But in a business sense... why give up any inventory when you have the availability of meteorologists already in the same building as you? (And until the CBS Radio split from the TV), they were on the same payroll. It cost 1060 nothing to add some pre-recorded reports to the duties of the TV weatherfolk.

They need to get rid of Cherri Gregg. Talk about an entitled person with an agenda.

I listen to KYW every day and whenever she comes on i change the channel.

You mean Katie Fehlinger, the morning weather girl on CBS 3? I don't she's bad at all.

I like her insight, but the only thing that irks me is when she says her name at the end of her reports. It's like she has trouble pronouncing it or doesn't show confidence in saying her name. Does she not like her name or something?

At least she's a lot better than Michelle "Good Afternoon to You" Durham. She has a terrible time keeping her composure on the air, and a bad example of this is one time when I heard her laugh coming in from a commercial break as she was about to report on a sad story. She REALLY needs to watch on her mic levels too if she's going to whisper one second and scream the next (ahem, PECOOOOOOOOOO! Sponsors traffic and transit on the twos).
