More KYW changes

If you were listening, say to Power 99 and your heard a newscast over your music, would you like that?

I don't think so.

Most people who have the money to spend that these ad agencies cater to, turn to a news station for just that. News.

I guess I make to much sense so my opinion is wrong.

The scenarios are not analogous.

Never mind that it’s one segment, not the full-time approach. Many people can handle a backing track for a feature report. It mixes up a dry format a tad.

This morning they're doing the time check with "Eastern Daylight Time". I'm surprised Silverman hasn't touched the time change tag (yet).

An Update on Entercom Philadelphia in talks

As the union at KYW News Radio 1060 called for a federal mediator for contract talks with Entercom Communications Inc., the all-news radio station laid off its head of digital news who also was past president of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, sources have confirmed.

KYW told Melony Roy, hired as a desk assistant in 2006, that her position was eliminated a day after the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or SAG-AFTRA, disclosed that it was seeking a mediator. Negotiations starting in August have stalled, The contract expired in October over such issues as the company’s desire to make its digital employees nonunion. Roy had no comment Monday.

The company confirmed that Roy is no longer with KYW but said it had nothing to do with the contract negotiations.

What is this newer feature called "The Week in Sound" ?

I don't need a hip hop beat behind my news reports.

Whose brilliant idea was this?

Alex Silverman. Everything is by him. He's micromanaging the whole station left and right and I can't even keep up.

For the record, it's an enhancement of the longer running "month in sound" that aired the last Sunday of every month.

I can't believe he canned Reporters' Roundup's monthly visits to the Shops at Liberty Place, and in turn gave Nikazy a longer air shift from 11am to 5:30pm. The show has no talent anymore either. It's barely any different than the regular newscasts now. No more interactivity between the anchors/reporters and the guests. It's all about Alex.

Hi, I'm Ian, the lead producer on 'Week in Sound.' It's designed to provide a brief (90 seconds or so) recap of the week's biggest stories in Philly and beyond, mixed with the songs that are impacting CHR, AC, and alternative. (The most recent one is here.) I wouldn't call it a hip-hop beat, but sure -- some of the music might be more rhythmic. Like any programming, it won't be to everyone's taste. But we hope it appeals to fans of radio and news junkies -- and anyone who can appreciate an interlude from our 'normal' presentation of the news.

Thanks, Ian. This week's choice of songs doesn't sound hiphopish at all! The choice of musical sound bites reminds me of Brandon Brooks's Rewind segments in fact.

Is this an offshoot of the "Month in Sound" segment? And that started in the Steve Butler era, correct?

Thanks!

Week in Sound replaces Month in Sound (which we adapted and expanded from our now-PD Alex Silverman's feature on WCBS 880). I did "Month" for about two years and while I loved the final product, the production work (as you might imagine) took the better part of an entire week each month. I hope to continue putting together Year in Sound from the weekly workparts...

Reading this made me smile, as I have not listened to KYW in a decade, except on rare occasions when travelling thru Philly. I thank God I found a more lucrative and serene life after radio, which was my life for 25+ years, as I cannot imagine how hard my former colleagues have had to work since 2016 or so. No such thing as a "slow news day" anymore. I thank the poster who put me in the category of some of the true pioneers and greats of radio news. I have always been honored to be the only KYW-AM staff member to have been hired TWICE by the "father of news radio", the late, great Roy Shapiro. (I worked there from '89 to '92, went to Miami for a few years, and then came back to KYW), and I'm also (kind of) flattered to know that the only person to ever (publicly) say I "sucked" on air took time out of his busy day to sign in as a guest on this discussion board, even tho he's banned, for the sole purpose of letting everyone know what he still thinks of me. It's almost like winning another award for my work. Lol

Elaine,
Welcome to the forum! It was always nice to hear your voice on KYW-AM. You are a true talent. Miss hearing you on the air. I hope that you enjoy whatever you are doing now. Have a happy, heathy, New Year.
