More layoffs at Cumulus Bangor

Oh no! They are so bare-bones already in Bangor. Now what did they do?!

Kid still has voice mail so that might be a good sign. Or not. The company let a lot of quality people go nationally today. Sad...

All I can say to those who still work in radio...GET OUT before your job is eliminated! The latest projections for radio revenue are even worse than last year's!!!

Most of the stations in Bangor (with the exception of the Zone Corp) will be mostly syndicated by the end of the year. It's so sad to see what this industry has turned into.

who says stephen king's group is immune to the current economy? yes WKIT is live and local, but 'ZON is all syndicated (save for the usual sports offerings and a local morning/afternoon show) I also heard a rumor that their Dover station might end up a simulcast of WZON.

All the BEST to those let go
I've been out for close to 17 Months Now
Hang in there!
Can't WAIT for "KARMA" TO KICK IN!!
It Always Does!

Good point. We are all so focused on what's happening to our business that perhaps we neglect to see that things are bad all over...nationally as well as locally. Things are grim, and it'll be awhile before they get better.

Sorry...the last few posts were weak. Just because the economy is effecting a lot does not mean that those who are unhappy in radio have no place to go. That is plain ignorance.

We are at a time where people have to start looking at what skills they have (or are willing to learn) and start looking for new career opportunities. It is NOT bad everywhere...and you have to get out of that mindset. I know two people who recently resigned from the Bangor radio market, and they're both going into completely different fields...with great opportunities starring them in the face. There are plenty of businesses that are thriving...but you have to make an effort to seek them out.

IF you sit around and believe that nothing is good...then that's what you're going to end up dealing with. Only those who think positive, get up and do something...are the ones who find new success. IF you're thinking, "but I have looked around, and there's nothing"....then you need to keep moving until you find your break.

The economy WILL turn around. Get a head start now!

I got out of full-time radio in July of 2007, and from there I went from sales associate at Radio Shack, to retail loss prevention agent at Rite Aid. (Yes, believe it or not RITE AID has plain clothes "detectives" spying on you while you shop)

Now I am a switchboard operator at a hospital. But they are training me for a clinical position. It's not radio, but I do get a 100 share in the ratings among the hospital every time I say "Code Green, 1 East, Code Green, 1 East" over the PA system!

Hopefully Damien and everyone else laid-off in radio can do better in the real world than I did though.

In regards to what Curb said, yes, there are some opportunities out there. However, if you think there are enough good jobs out there for all the people who have recently become unemployed (and again I'm not referring to just radio people), you're mistaken. It appears you're a 'glass half full' person, and that's fine. Like I said in my last post, the economy as a whole has a long, long way to go, regardless of how any one individual bounces back.

Funny story about WDME (Stephen King's Dover station)

I was the overnight guy on WKIT when they bought WDME. At first, WDME had a live morning show with Mark, and then Al who is (or was) the company's promotions director. After awhile, Al didn't want to do the show anymore so they decided to have the morning show be voicetracked. They offered me the gig, since I was already there finishing my overnight show on WKIT when the morning show would hit. The idea being that the tracked morning show can sound as fresh as possible even though it's voicetracked.

When I first started doing it around early 2006 there were TONS of local sponsors and commercials on the log. I could barely keep track of them all. But as the months went on, one by one each sponsor went away and the stopsets in the morning got shorter and shorter. By the time I left I had only one Sports sponsor at 6:30 and spotbreaks so short that I would hear the 7am news hit at 6:50AM on my way home some mornings. I'm not sure if the advertisers all left because the morning show was not live, or my overall crummy show (recording a morning show AFTER being on the air live all night...BAD IDEA) or because the account executives stopped supporting the clients on WDME. But for whatever reason, Zone Corp seemed to lose all interest in WDME and this was back in 2007. Hopefully they have turned it around since then and are not having whomever replaced me overnight on WKIT voicetrack the morning show on WDME. I was expecting 103.1 to get shut down then and I am shocked they still have it on the air. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they finally put it out of it's misery and simulcast WZON instead in the near future.

Anybody want to bring us up to speed on the latest from The Acme Road? Anybody left over there? I've heard there was quite a serious purge earlier this week.

Well, 2 things---1. I don't know of anyone being let go this week, and 2. regarding 'serious', if you're referring to quantity, AFAIK just one person last week. However, quality-wise, a good man was let go. Cheers, Damien. Heads up, buddy.

Looks like 103.1 WDME is now a full time simulcast of WZON (unless someone forgot to flip the switch after the basketball game)

Lets see the "local owners are better/stephen king knows how to run a local operation" people defend this one now that King has blown up Piscatiquis County's only radio station.

Though unfortunate, that doesn't mean that people living in that county have no radio station(s) to listen to. I'm not convinced that this one anecdote negates the 'local ownership is better' theory.
