More major changes at 93.3

All Access is reporting that J93.3 is returning to its old name and becoming part of the JOY FM network of stations that serves Sarasota, New Port Richey, Gainesville, Ocala, Lakeland. AA says that current morning host Jerry Williams moves to Pm Drive and that Jayar stays on middays and Paige in evenings. The Joy FM morning show will also air in south and west metro Atlanta. I guess a JOY FM simlucast will air during all other slots.

Does anyone have any information regarding fundraising success at J93? Even though it is a very good station I have always suspected it's listeners would be slow to embrace the new non commercial status.....at least the "writing the check" part.

Does this have anything to do with the old MOYL nostalgia format that was on WJYA/WJYF/WJYI (104.1 and its AM side, Joy AM/FM) 20-25 years ago?

WVFJ/93.3 used to call itself Joy FM until Jerry Williams arrived as PD around 2000. The format stayed the same, but he changed the moniker to J93.3.

I don't understand why this station can't carve a healthy secular audience in the Southern Crescent doing a local news/ community talk/ public affairs format on a 4-5 hour wheel. Adopt a "us against the world", "nobody respects the Southside" image and pretend life doesn't exist north of the airport. Forget ratings, forget agencies. Get the chamber of commerce directory and get the sales staff to work. I mean, where is unemployment the lowest in Atlanta? Fayette/Henry.

You put together a $15 rate card, hire three laid off newspaper ad reps and you'd sell 50 $500 annuals within 9 months. You're telling me that station's b-e is higher than $20,000/month? If it is, it's because the GM or PD makes too much.

I would love to get my hands on a situation like that.

WVFJ is a ministry. It's purpose is not to make money but provide Christian programming for the Atlanta area. Before The Fish came along it was the only commercial FM station doing this format in the Atlanta area and was moderately successful as a commercial station.
The station used to do well (ratings) in the southern/western metro counties. I have not seen any data for several years but it used to be a very marketable product. I think they had major problems getting, and keeping, good salepeople......like practically every Atlanta area station. I'm amazed at the turnover where I work (and you can make major money if you're good.) So I think they finally realized it might work better as a non comm for a whole host of reasons. The parent corporation is Watkins Industries.....this may have been mostly about taxes and moving money around.
My guess is WVFJ will continue on as is for years to come.

Yep, I'm familiar with it, but, even 3-4 years ago, it had a "Fish" feel that wasn't so hardcore religious. They had local advertisers and a a little southside niche. I think they could still do that by working harder and smarter.

Non-com beg-a-thons on 93.3 with a decent signal? To me, that's really tantamount to quitting.
