More moves from KRON to KPIX!

It looks like KPIX (CBS5) is the new home for former KRON (MyKRON4) employees. Today it was announced that Wendy Tokuda will be anchoring the CBS5 Eyewitness News @ 5 with Allen Martin, starting in April.

Lets see... From KRON to KPIX:

John Kessler
Sue Kwon
Anna Duckworth
Dennis O'Donnell
Dr. Mulvihill (sp)

Now Wendy, although she was at KPIX before. Just like Pete Wilson was at KGO before when he was at KRON.

Adding to the list of KRON to KPIX....

Brian Hackey
Phil Matier
Liam Mayclem

Did we missed anyone else?

Good for Wendy!

"Good for Wendy!"

Truly. Tokuda must have swallowed a couple gallons of water before deserting that sinking ship.

There are also a number of former KRON reporters at KGO-TV - Laura Anthony, Noelle Cisneros, and Vic Lee, maybe more. Lee's bio on the ABC7 website mentions that he was at KRON for 34 years!

I tend to forget about Pete Wilson because he was smart enough to desert the sinking ship early - while the ink on the Young/Chronicle deal was still wet.

Wendy Tokuda always had that deer caught in the headlights when reading the news. Not impressed with her talents. Oh well with two anchors at 5 pm will be easier to take. ;D

"Wendy Tokuda always had that deer caught in the headlights when reading the news."

That's interesting - I remember not liking her when she first came on as co-anchor with Dave McElhatton (probably 20 years ago, I guess). Young and pretty, but not much substance. As I remember, she tried too hard to be serious - maybe she was trying to be a counterpoint to the jovial Dave. But to me, she ended up coming off as a little conceited and self-important.

But since her return to the Bay Area some years ago, I've liked her. She seems a smart person, and has grown into good reporter who has learned a lot in her career. I hope she has a successful run at KPIX.

Gee...Will someone buy out KRON-IC 4 from Young. Watching their newscast is so horrible. It just seem like their in Market#122 instead of Market#5.

Lets talk about the raitings, I know I can't post the actual numbers, but I can tell you their newscast can't get above a 1.5 rating.

"Gee...Will someone buy out KRON-IC 4 from Young."

From what I understand, Young Broadcasting is still obsessed with getting back at least what they paid for the station. What they bought was a heritage NBC affiliate with a top notch highly rated news department. Needless to say, what they did wrong has become legendary - including their attempt to fight the NBC network. Some people think they took a principled stand against a big bully, but I think they managed to do the wrong thing at every turn.

I have no idea what the station is worth now, but I'm sure it's worth much less than the $750 million they paid for it.

From what I read, since NBC did not get the station, they insisted that Young Broadcasting run it as if it was an O/O. Demanding that they brand the station NBC4. Plus NBC was going to charge Young fees for carrying network shows. No other NBC affiliate has to pay, they receive money for showing the network shows.

Young Broadcasting felt that they spent their own big bucks, only to have NBC dictate they way the staion would run. Sure NBC called their bluff and went to San Jose, but that is the breaks. Someone was going to lose. This battle would not be a compromise. Young Broadcasting in the long run .... lost. Lost ratings, respect, and most importantly equity from their investment. Too bad as KRON was a very respectable station.

If Young really blew the NBC affiliation because they insisted on calling it "KRON-4" iinstead of "NBC-4," they're even stupider than I imagined.

Granted, NBC comes off badly in this one, too - they were outbid by Young, and were not happy. Also, all of the Big 3 networks have been faced with reduced revenues, and have been trying to find a way make the non O&O affiliates pay for network programming, instead of vice-versa. NBC decided to use KRON as a test-case. Unfortunately, Young had a lot more to lose than NBC. If Young wasn't ready to compromise, they badly mis-calculated, and they NEVER should have paid that kind of $$$ for KRON.

I couldn't agree with you more!!!!! KRON4: the bay area's step child.

Who is on tops right now in Bay Area news? For the 5, 6 and 11 newscasts?

Yes they mis-calculated. KNTV probably wasn't even considered a place for NBC to go. Young most likely figured that they would be an NBC affiliate. Since no other San Francisco station was available. Maybe TV 20, but to go to a higher channel has not always worked out. So I am sure they thought that NBC would definately stick with KRON.

Young Broadcasting must have pooped their pants when NBC announced they would buy and operate KNTV. Talk about the deadly sucker punch!

"Young Broadcasting must have pooped their pants when NBC announced they would buy and operate KNTV. Talk about the deadly sucker punch!"

Truly. But if what I remember reading at the time is correct, it was a double-screw up from Young. It was NOT clear at first that NBC would purchase and operate KNTV. First, when Young categorically turned down any suggestion that they pay NBC for the programming, the then-owners of KNTV said "Hello, we'll pay NBC." At that point, NBC signed up KNTV as an affiliate. This is the point Young should have pooped their pants. Subsequent to that, NBC offerred to buy KNTV, with an agreed upon price of $250 million. But before finalizing the offer, NBC tried one more time to buy KRON. At that point, Young should have lowered their $750 million asking price, taken a substantial but recoverable loss on KRON, then moved on. But they decided to play hardball, and NBC bought KNTV instead.

As a result (to extend the "poop" analogy), Young's stock price has been in the s**t house ever since.

Jeez, talk about not learning from one's mistakes...

If NBC tried to buy KRON one more time, what a glaring indication of their willingness to go to some length at least for the Young folks...NBC would've gotten the plum, major-market station they'd lusted after for almost 6 decades, and Young would've walked away maybe not with a killing, but at least a mitigated loss...a little of something is a helluva lot better than all of nothing...man, talk about a win/win thrown away...wow.

I remember reading an SF Chronicle article after the sale of KNTV to NBC. A bit of irony there since the former owner of the Chronicle - the Chronicle Publishing Company also owned KRON. Anyway, in the article, an NBC exec was interviewed. He was flabbergasted that Young would not compromise on their asking price, and insisted upon getting back their entire investment. The exec said (paraphrasing) "we saved a half a billion dollars by buying KNTV. It was a no-brainer."
