More Music On KDWN

KDWN is playing music on the overnight shift Saturday. It's just music and sweepers, no live or tracked announcer. This is the first time they have scheduled hours of music programming as opposed to playing music just to cover for technical glitches.

The music is a mix of 70s AC and adult standards. They just segued from "Crazy Love" by Poco into "Who's Sorry Now" by Connie Francis.

This was the first time I heard them play some 80s titles. They played "Who's Holding Donna Now" by Debarge, that song sounded surprisingly fresh to me. They also played "Smooth Operator" by Sade and "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler. Those last two songs technically fit, but are soooo burned out that I resented them being in the mix.

The two biggest "Oh Wows" for me were "Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All" by the 5th Dimension and "Daisy Jane" by America.

They played "My Love" by Wings., it used to seem like a "silly love song" to me. Now when I hear it I am in total awe of how great it is, especially the guitar solo towards the end.

Of course I realize I am analyzing the AM 720 music selection more than KDWN themselves. This is simply a case of "It's just overnights, why pay someone to be here to do an OK talk show , let's turn off the lights and let the computer play some tunes". Sounds reasonable enough, I'm not critical of this decision, I would rather hear a good local show, but I'll take music over tape delayed Michael Reagan any day.

Could this have been a "trial run" towards a new format mix of news/talk & classic Top 40 music for AM? Hmmmm.......

KDWN played music again on Sunday overnights. My biggest criticism is song turnover. They played "Rock Me Gently" by Andy Kim two times within a three song period, "New York New York" by Frank Sinatra twice wihin 15 minutes and "Show And Tell" by Al Wilson THREE times within a 20 minute time period.  Obviously a technical problem. Here I thought HOT 97.5 was pounding "I Know U See It" by Young Joc (a guilty pleasure, I love that song for some reason) today in an extremely heavy rotation, it can't even begin to compare to the frequency KDWN was playing "Show And Tell" LOL

The biggest "Oh Wow" KDWN provided me this morning was "A Little More Love" by Olivia Newton John.  The last time I had such a jolt from a radio station playing an ONJ song was in 1982  when the old 1140 KMJJ played "Sam".

My single favorite song I heard KDWN play today was "I Only Have Eyes for You" by the Flamingos. It's not only one of the most romantic songs of all time, it has a certain "spooky" quality about it that gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

I'm starting to become convinced that KDWN IS using the old 104.3 KJUL music library. They play the same ratio of Classic AC to Standards that KJUL used to and (unfortunatley) they are playing the Rod Stewart cover versions of standards that KJUL used to play.

I don't know anything about engineering, but I have never heard music sound so good on AM. It seems they are doing something with the processing to maximize the sound quality of the music for AM.

An 84 year old woman called Pete Moss to complain about the music. She said "Whoever bought the station sure is screwing things up". She said her and 11 other women from the "old home" are so upset they are considering boycotting the sponsors of KDWN. Then a man called in to say that he likes the music and that it reminds him of the KDWN of the 1970s. He even remembered when Pete Moss did mornings there in 1977.

I hope that KDWN didn't cancel the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I'm not LDS but I have been a huge fan of the MTC ever since I heard their rousing rendition of "Glory Glory Hallelujah" one Sunday morning. I suppose I could always catch it on KNUU. Another good religious show on KNUU is the "Lutheran Hour".

Jay....

You can also find the Tab Choir on FOXNews1280-KDOX as part of "The Sounds of Sunday" from 8-9AM.

I learned the exact reason why KDWN played music during the overnights over the weekend. Ken Stahl was scheduled to do those shifts. He has had trouble learning the new board, phone system and computer. He didn't feel confident that he could pull off doing the show, so they just went ahead and played music.

This is a 50kw blowtorch talk station. But the scheduled host can't figure out how to use the new equipment, so they play music. (And apparently don't do it very well, with one song 3 times in 20 minutes!)

Why do I get the idea that KDWN under Beasley will continue to be the station we all know and love?
