More oldies via WCAP (1955-69)

Mark W. on the boston-radio-interest list noted that the new owners at WCAP 980 are officially in
charge and he said there's one change already--oldies from 1955-69 will air weeknights
from 7 pm to 5 am, as "Beatles and Beyond". Lowell Devils hockey may pre-empt this. The
schedule page at http://www.wcap.net doesn't reflect it but it sounds like you'll need to go to
WRKO if you want the San-Fran-based Mr. Borders, Language, Culture, Buy My Books. (Unless
they run him 6-7 pm?)

more oldies, and some pre-Beatles...

Hey Raccoon, thanks for the tip!

I'll keep an ear out for that when I'm in the area next week. Call me a purist, but that music really does seem to sound better on am. :)

yeah...when it isn't pre-empted by shot--SCORE!!!!, that is! (like tonight & Fri night--well, at least at the
start of the night)

no prob

I'm looking forward to checking it out. I wonder if there will be any live DJ's?

Speaking of oldies on AM, I stumbled onto an oldies show - 1950's through early '70s, heavy on the early/mid '60s, and a little doo-wop sprinkled in - on WBIX 1060 AM last Sunday night. It was definitely live and local.

I didn't catch the DJ's name, but I think he's on 9-11 PM Sunday nights. I'm guessing it's either a brokered show, or the DJ may be someone who has an off-air behind the scenes job at the station during the week who they allow to "do his thing" for a couple of hours on Sunday nights. Whoever it is spent a little money and had a few Pam jingles made up to sound like WMEX 45 years ago, but with the WBIX call letters.

When I tuned back after 11 PM, WBIX was off the air for the Sunday overnight. I heard KYW in Philly.

Stranger things have happened, but I kinda doubt they'll bill enough at night to justify having an airstaff. Maybe Clark will do a Scott Shannon & voicetrack that shift himself at some point.
My guess, though is that he'll concentrate on improving daytime revenue/listenership first.

I caught the format last night. It's actually called "Beatles and Before".

It's good to hear. The playlist sounds like many oldies stations did about fifteen or twenty years ago. Some of the big '50s hits, heaviest on the early to mid '60s pop hits, some early Beatles, some Motown. Occasionally there was a pop or soul oldie from as late as 1970, but the format stays away from any harder "classic rock" material.

There is something about hearing this music on analog mono AM again, with static in some areas and co-channel stations (mainly WTRY) oscillating in the background, that is nostalgic for those of us who remember how it sounded back in the day. I was listening driving in the Boston west suburbs.

The liners voiced by 1960's WBZ legend Dick Summer are a nice touch.

Much of this music has been missing on the area dial for a number of years. Some of it is played on certain shows on WATD, and some of it is played on WBOQ, but they also play later "soft-rock" with it. This WCAP playlist reminds me of what we played when I worked at oldies 1150 WMEX twenty years ago.

With WJIB and WCAP, we actually now have two AM music stations to choose from in metro Boston at night, for those who like "real" oldies and nostalgia. It's been a long time since I've selected between AM stations to choose which song I wanted to hear.

http://www.bostonradiowatch.com now reports that the station, under its new ownership, will launch
a new live and local show called Merrimack Magazine weekdays 6-10 am starting Monday.
"The infotainment show will focus on Lowell’s cultural/arts and restaurant scene. " One of the hosts
is Dean Johnson who I believe had done radio columns for the Herald

The network talkers page at wcap.net needs to be updated as well. Mentions a weekend show off BTRN bird but the host of that show unfortunately passed away some time ago. Unless they plan to add music to the weekends.
