More on "Cavemen"

If I understand correctly, that puts the "Cavemen" up against CBS's NCIS.

This tells me that ABC is trying hard to go after the audience that isn't really into NCIS type programming.

This makes some sense to me, as it also justifies that they are intending to refrain from airing programming similar to NCIS/CSI/Law&Order durring that time.

Programming that I guess, will effectively draw attention to their network better than programs they have chosen to cancell.

It'll be very interesting to see how this plays out.

It all depends on what they do with the concept. During a GEICO ad, I told my wife that the cavemen will have their own show this fall. She (a truly typical midrange 25-44 female viewer) thought it was an awesome idea and wanted to check it out.

So, the potential is definitely there for the show to do well. But, it has to be a well written and well done show. If it's crap, it will have a big first night and will proceed to drop off a cliff.

Can you picture it?

Here's the Saturday Night Live ad spoof:

The Geico Gekko, standing in grass, is doing his speil.
He's interrupted by a big hand reaching down and grabbing him.
Wide shot: It's the Geiko caveman...who EATS him!

yeaaahhhh...um....just another reason that for about 9 years I've found something else to do 1130PM Saturday nights ..... heres hoping the caveman skit doesnt come across like the last SNL skit of the night....or most Will Farrell movies....

The Cavemen ROCK.
However, if they go without a laugh track and do this stupid empty pause crap that the Office and the other new comedies are doing, the thing is doomed.

The Cavemen get their own show- then it's only a matter of time before we see Captain Crunch get his own series. ;D

Laugh track or not?

Think so?

When I first heard about the show, I thought the opposite.
Let nuance work, y'know?

There was ONE episode of M*A*S*H that they did without the laugh track, and it really gave the show a different, more-appropriate, feel.

I'm thinkin' that -- like Borat -- this "Cavemen" show will have a lot to say (in Caveman's case, about discrimination).

Letting-the-viewer absorb the message as-is seems more appropriate.

Agree? Disagree?

I think we should watch first, and comment from there.
Who knows? Perhaps ABC will surprise us.
(I still think the show will move to comedy central if it survives)

I will bet my bottom dollar that there will be a lot of product placement for GEICO in this series. Think about it: the first pseudo-payola TV series.

I've always thought that shows with laugh tracks mean they aren't funny... ;D

Pay up the "bottom dollar". If a GEICO ad appears on the show, it will be a random "best time available" spot. There is no formal connection between the insurance agency and the show. GEICO owner Berkshire Hathaway gets a royalty for the use of the characters. Thats it.

And based on the first clip I saw, the smartness of the spot writers hasnt transformed to the sit com.

6 episodes, tops.

On the contrary...
Laugh track helps make it funny. It is a psychological cue that you aren't the only one in the room laughing. The trouble of course has been that too many bad sitcoms with jokes that were not funny were relying on the laugh track to make it seem like they were funny, when they weren't. But how funny is it when you are watching a standup routine and jokes fall on dead silence? Those quiet pauses make it really hard to laugh, and its easy to feel like something is missing.

Shows like the Office, My Name is Earl, etc, don't use laugh track but that's because they've invented devices, where the scene is so rediculous, you still have that mental cue. But I dispise this sudden hatred for a studio audience. Not all of us share in this sudden "sit coms are lame" attitude.

from what I hear when TV Guide publishes the 50 worst shows in TV history in the Year 2525 that caveman has already clinched the # 1 spot! beating out My Mother the Car!

Caveman could be a good show if done right but I'm not counting on it after seeing "30 Rock" this year. That too could have been a good show if it hadn't been done stupid.

30 Rock is hilarious. Seems like some of you have just made up your minds about things without seeing a single episode.

Gee I kinda remember this show when it was called "It's about time"
