More On Kidd Chris

As most of you know who scan this board, I am one of several who constantly challenges the Philly radio-meisters to bring in some new blood to the market; congratulations to Infinity/YSP on actually doing just that.

Looking forward to hearing him in full rant on-air in Afternoons...and, then...perhaps...seguing into Howard's slot. Can he bring "Les-bian Dating" into AM Drive as successfully as Stern? Here's hoping...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

from www.allaccess.com, Thursday, 18 August, 2005, "NewNews":

INFINITY Rock WYSP/PHILADELPHIA makes a widely anticipated move and adds former KSRX (K-ROCK 102.7)/SAN ANTONIO morning man KIDD CHRIS for afternoons 5-8p, beginning AUGUST 29.

The rest of WYSP's lineup will shift to accommodate CHRIS, with TOMMY CONWELL moving to 10a-2p, COUZIN ED to 2-5p, and MATT AND HUGGY to 8-11p.

"I'm pleased to welcome KIDD to WYSP, continuing in the tradition of bringing the best talent to the airwaves of PHILADELPHIA radio," said VP/Programming TIM SABEAN. "He will be an excellent addition to our team and a voice unlike anything heard in the market."

"I'm very excited to be joining a legendary station like WYSP with a winning record and a winning staff," says KIDD CHRIS. "I hope I'm accepted more than I was by the females in high school. Seriously, I'm in good hands with TIM SABEAN and the rest of his crew. This is a highlight of my career."

Now, is KIDD WYSP's choice to take over mornings when HOWARD STERN heads for SIRIUS at the end of the year? He has been a regular contributor to STERN.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let the "Rock wars" begin...f'real...

Its a shame the shortened Couzin Ed show will only be short-lived. Kidd's shift is just a warm-up, bet the house he will replace Stern, that is the deal, then the regular air-shifts will resume when he does.

Congrats on getting your "new blood". How will you feel when 10 years from now he's working at his 4th station in the market?

"new blood"

This "new blood" talk is so exagerrated. There has been a steady flow of outside-market talents entering Philly to play radio. Are you not paying attention?

Then he'll fit right in with the rest of the tired, overblown-egoed, re-hashed and tired "talent" that's here right now, won't he? :)

And, more than a few are here NOW who should be booted out the door right onto their kiesters. Perhaps you are one of those; are you feeling the heat? Good.

Re: Couzin Ed - has got to go

His time here is done, the stale factor will even be more evident after Sterny boy goes to the little doggy company. WYSP demo is based on music now not personalities... Mr Ed is just tired and worn out to the ear, time for him to move on to like Cincinnati or Virginia...

I don't agree says a Couzin Ed fan.

Um, no. Merely making a point. Wake up and realize there are more stations in Philly outside the 3 rock stations you obviously only listen to.

Thank you, I am wide awake and listen to stations as varied as XPN, The Hawk, B101, WRTI, MMR, MGK, YSP, KYW and JBR.

As you do, I have a right to an opinion. Mine is that the talent "level" in Philly radio ranges from the tedious to the boring with occasional stops at apathy. The addition of Kidd Chris will most assuredly cause YSP's cume to zoom, most likely cause Greater Media to counter-program MMR with something or other hilariously inadequate and will certainly infuse Philly radio with a fresh approach. Why is that a bad thing?

Will Kidd Chris eventually be shoved into Stern's abandoned slot? I'd bet he will be. Will he replace a legend such as Stern in a short time. Probably not. However, the one thing Kidd will do is to inject a new sense of competitiveness into the radio dial that is Philly.

No offense to local staples such as Pierre, Chris 'N' Tiffany, Evans 'N' Andie, Couzin Ed, et al, but, some of their acts are growing long in the tooth, are tired and are in danger of contracting a terminal case of the lame-ass. The ideal solution is for this transfusion of fresh DNA, as it were, to shake these dinosaurs out of their doldrums before they turn into pools of petroleum.

That is my point; nothing more and nothing less.

Competition is good.

New competition is always a good thing. Your point is well taken.
You do, at times, make valid points. If you could just get beyond the smart-ass attitude with which you make them, they might actually be taken seriously.
The acts you mention below in your post are long term succesful, regardless of what you (or I ) think of them. I for one, doubt that KiDDChris will change the landscape all that much. He will do whatever it is he does and the others will do what they do. Don't expect a major upheaval just because his act hasn't been in Philly yet. You seem have have disdain for established, success in this market. Why? In most markets around the country, there are entrenched, succesfull shows and stations. Listeners like what they have to offer.
By the way, have you heard the Sirius 80's channel? Talk about dinosaurs. They seem to have hired all of the surviving original MTV staff.

"Learning Is Good"...Animal House/1978

Thanks; much appreciated.

All due respect, I AM a smart-ass. Years of doing live, edge-of-the-seat, unscripted repartee with a psycho partner in Mornings and Afternoons tends to make you into one. I wear the badge, sir (or, madam), with honor. :)

As for "getting past the smart-ass attitude with which I make them so I might be taken seriously"...honestly, that's more you than me. You apparently care more about style; I definitely care more about substance.

> The acts you mention below in your post are long term

Man gets home Friday evening after long week at work. Man asks wife "what's for supper?" "Meatloaf", answers the wife, whereupon the husband does a u-turn, heads back out door, yelling at wife about "damned meatloaf." Wife yells back at husband: "you didn't complain about my meatloaf on Monday night or Wednesday night or last night..."!

Long-term doesn't always equal continued success.

I didn't say that Kidd will be an automatic success in Philly; I DID say that he comes to Philly/YSP at a propitious moment: the demise of Howard on terrestrial/local radio. How will YSP fill that huge gulf? How will MMR counter-program? How will Kidd's act play in Philly? All are valid questions that, at least to me, make the future competition between and among Philly radio stations more interesting...given the above set of params.

> You seem have have disdain for established, success in this market. Why?

The only disdain I have for Philly radio is the Beverly Hillbilly aspect of programming: "When Cousins Mate". The continued merry-go-round of the same/lame talents making the rounds of the same/lame stations defies logic. If they sucked at Station A they'll probably suck at Station B.

Besides...why the fear? If Pres & Steve, Pierre, Couzin Ed...whoever...are such "established, entrenched and successful" talents in the market, then they will CONTINUE to be that no matter who shows up to play in their sandbox, right?

I simply look forward to the arrival of someone new from withOUT the village walls and moat. Let's just hope the Zardozery amongst us don't rush him with torches blazing and pitchforks waving. :)

Sorry. Talk of "dinosaurs" is hereby prohibited in Pennsylvania due to the official Commonwealth policy of "Intelligent Design". There are no dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible and we can't mention them here, either. 'Tis heresy. :)

(Good conversation witcha; look forward to more.)

Love 'n' kisses...

Mr. Smart-Ass
