MORE ON PHIL HENDRIE

Phil's new show is great!

What is funny is that he is SLOWLY going back to his old format by doing fake guests and ridiculous situations...

I think Phil is pulling one over on the KFI audience in Los Angeles. Anyone heard the new host called "Sean Rima" on KFI Sunday afternoons at 3-5pm? He just finished filling in for the vacationing John&Ken Show the week of July 2nd-6th. I swear this guy is Phil Hendrie, using a new "talk radio host" character voice.

When I first heard this guy, something seemed strangely familiar, like a character from one of Phill's skits, then after listening to him for a while, it seemed that the "talk-radio-voice" faded out and all of Phil's mannerisms and wit were evident. Then, after a station break, he started back in with the heavy dose of the "talk radio host voice". He frequently used phrases that are typical for Phil to say, along with the kind of rapid-fire wit that Phil is known for.

Don't take my word for it, listen to the guy for a while. He's replacing Dale Dye's show on Sundays from 3-5pm on KFI in Los Angeles.

I fired-off emails to various hosts on KFI, asking if Sean is really Phil in disguise. Not surprisingly, there were no replies except for a somewhat ambiguous reply from 7-10pm host John Ziegler, who denied it, claiming that Sean Rima isn't nearly as talented as Hendrie. (Why would he diss an alleged co-worker and complement someone who is on a competing radio network?)

A quick Google search on Sean Rima doesn't bring up much of anything except a reference on Denver's KOA radio site where Rima is alleged to originate from. All you'll see on KOA's site is an obscure high school photo of someone that's supposed to be Rima. Rima's bio on the KFI site is pure nonsense along with a picture of somene that cannot be identified. Other than that, the guy does not exist on the web - a fictional character created by Phil, just like Ted Bell, etc.

Please take a listen to this guy and let me know what you folks think, I'm 90% sure it's Phil slightly modifying his voice. He's done this sort of thing before back in the '90's when he hosted a show on KFI for 3 days in a row with a middle-eastern accent, claiming to be an Egyptian DJ. He then went on full time at KFI with the Phil Hendrie show we all came to know.

While I am not anywhere near 90% sure that it is Phil, this Sean Rima does seem highly suspect. No real paper trail. The way his voice sounded and the way he spoke was pretty hacky for someone's real voice, especially someone on KFI. At times, he sounds incredibly fake while at other times it sounds like Phil's real voice is coming out. On top of that, some of his word emphasis and choice and speach patterns are identical to Phil's.

It would seem weird though, that Phil would be doing a show 6 days a week.

Update: The more I listen to Sean the more I am leaning in the Phil direction. Sean's voice is all over the place.

you're right, the new show is great! and i'm very happy to hear the stable of characters coming back. vernon dozier is the best!

Interesting that Phil would be back on KFI since he wasn't happy that they had moved his weekday show to KLAC. If he is to stay with CC, maybe they should finally kill Air America and start something fresh on KTLK using Hendrie as an anchor. Or, too bad KLSX doesn't make room for him.

C&W are doing pretty well, J&J are flagged out of LA, and you can bet Leykis would jump up and down if Jack Silver so much tried to put Hendrie on in the 3-5am spot where they run a rerun.

How well are Conway & Whitman doing anyway? I only discovered them after Phil went off the air and now I listen to their whole show via podcast.. I think they've got the best talk show in LA (except for their Jesse Jackson bit which has got to have run its course over the years).

As for Phil .. it would be nice to be able to hear him somewhere in LA but the new format is a tad bit too political for my liking although it has gotten a lot better since he started.

Having worked for CC L.A. and spoken to the staff there, plus merely having been in-studio for a couple of Phil's shows, I can confirm that Phil Hendrie is not Sean Rima.

I’ve given the new show several listens and I am sorry to say it is a big snorefest. He seems to be rambling most of the time. I don’t feel he is really preparing for the show. Frankly, I don’t know who his audience is anymore. Many times I feel he is catering to the Michael Savage crowd, then he goes off on pop culture topics that are dated by the time his show airs. Just the other night he was talking about how he downloaded a song from the Apple Music Store and how music delivery systems were changing. So who was he speaking to with this dated subject? A ninety year old?

I have to agree wholeheartedly. I still listen but he is hurtling down the Michael Savage road very quickly. It is like he is using the show in the place of a personal psychiatrist, and we, the audience, are the psychiatrist.

Also, here he swore he would never bring back any of his "characters" and low and behold Bobbie Dooley, Jay Sanos, Ted Bell, Lloyd, the Reverand, are all back. Despite a toll free number being given out he rarely brings on listeners anymore.

He has to build an audience again, but I don't think that is the problem. Phil has never liked talk radio callers.

Phil screens the crap out of his callers. It's rare of him to actually take listener calls. He never takes calls from anyone who's just calling to say how great he is. He never takes calls from "professional talk show callers" (ones with this type of call: "Hey Phil, great show as always. I usually agree with everything you say, but I'd like to ask what your opinion is on [insert issue here]. I'll hang up and listen."), or people who rattle off pre-written talking points (been noticing a lot of Ron Paul callers on radio lately). He usually takes calls from people presenting an interesting point-of-view on the subject matter, or have a good counter-point to what Phil's talking about. If he does let a caller on, and the call is getting boring, he'll just hang up on the caller.

Also, other things Phil said he wouldn't do:

- Return to AM/FM radio.
- Get a divorce.
- Buy another car that wasn't a hybrid.

Eh, he has an okay track record for a talk show host when it comes to saying something and doing something else. That's one thing to always keep in mind: Talk radio hosts are often just dopes on a microphone, and no one to look to for guidance. They aren't all-around experts, and often times don't really know what they're talking about. They're just really good and sounding like they know what they're talking about.
