More Problems for Pacifica

90.7 is currently such a wasted spot on the LA radio dial. Their programming is horrid, their politics are way beyond rational, and their reported listening audience is miniscule. My hope is to see Pacifica unload the station and KCRW pick it up allowing KCRW to have a full-time news, talk, and features signal as well as a full-time eclectic music signal.

Yet another manifestation of the uncooperative organisational culture that has afflicted Pacifica since, well, before the suicide of Lewis Hill. In the late 1960s, Bill Schechner, while a news reporter for KPFA/KPFB Berkeley, rather famously said, "We is a dangerous word to use around here"...

Go to Google, type in kpfk employees demands and read all about how the KPFK community is eating itself alive.

The Pacifica outlet in Houston (KPFT) shortly after it originally went on the air had the guy wires cut on the tower due to a Texan hating the absurd politics so much. Now at KPFT they are running Al Jazeera news (I know it is probably incorrectly spelled). But no one listens in Houston except radicals that double as homeless (oh wait that was their employees at a remote).

It has to be the worst radio i've ever heard. It's broadcasting school quality at best. Stupid move after stupid move. With a cume of a paltry 80,000, they devote 4 hours a night to spanish language programming! The Pacifica Evening News is a joke! Subpar production value, horrible presentation, and pratically begging for money on the air. It's so counter cultural, appealing to a miniscule lunatic fringe, not to mention utter fragmentation, and absolutely no continunity from program to program. The only compelling programming on air doesn't originate from within. You can tell by who's on the air, that the station is rife with internal politics. You wouldn't even know that the station is in So. Cal. Absolutely no visabillity, or representation in the streets, no high profile talent. What if you gave a revolution, and nobody came? Stations like KPPC, KCRW, KKJZ, KUSC, are staffed by broadcasters, not untrained novices. It's a shame that a station with such signal coverage is allowed to wallow in it's own incompetance, especially these days when news and information outlets have such an abundance of topics and issues to cover. Pacifica needs to revamp it's entire business policy before it's too late.

You're right 'Big A'. How do some of these people get on the air? I see some are even board members. In the words of the late Johnnie Cochran..."It's a cesspool of contamination".

That's the American system of broadcasting. If you have a license, you can do with it what you please within the law.

The programs on Pacifica stations range from very good to just awful, but I would rather have a station like this on the air (flawed as they are) than another station playing Adele.

There is one way they could right the ship: Sell their commercial-band 99.5 New York City frequency (full class B from the Empire State Building) with an interlocking agreement to buy WFME 94.7 in Newark, NJ (which is on the block). WFME is a full B broadcasting from First Mountain in NJ, which looks right into Manhattan. Their signal is not as good as being on the ESB, but it covers the five boroughs, northern NJ and pieces of LI and the 'burbs. They would get a fortune for 99.5, and only need to peel off maybe 25% to buy WFME.

Millions left over.

My gosh can you imagine the infighting if they had millions to spend? The Pacifica volunteers union (yes they have a union for unpaid employees) would clash with the paid staff who'd clash with the anarchists who'd clash with the Leninists who'd clash with progressive-centrists, etc. and pretty soon the lawyers would have it all and Pacifica would back to where is now. Throwing good money after bad won't solve their problems.

Business policy? They don't need no stinkin' capitalist "business" policy!

I look forward to watching these events unfold just as described.

Guess these problems "run in the family".

They'll come to San Diego too - "Activist San Diego" has a CP for a low power FM in the mountains of south-central San Diego County. I think their motto will be "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

With the net, Pacific radio is sort of too costly for what they do. They have always been chaotic even back in the 60s

At least it's better than most of the crap on the radio now at other stations

That's why it has the killer ratings and a huge listener base donating tons of money to keep it going.

Oh wait, in the Pacifica world, most of the public are seens as meat-eating cretins too stupid to be allowed to make decisions.
