More Radio One Cuts

I just learned that in addition to the people fired yesterday at Hot 107-9, the following others were terminated:

Renee Miller - Afternoon drive on WJZZ and long associated with the smooth jazz format in Atlanta

Sonya Hamm - Middays on WPZE and the station's first morning host

Frank Johnson - Station Manager; Frank was awarded the construction permit for 107.5 by the FCC and sold it to Radio One. He's probably set for life but didn't expect this.

I can't imagine WJZZ without Renee Miller. She IS Smooth Jazz 107.5. I have always loved listening to her. Really bad move, Radio One

WJZZ has been doing better, so I doubt a format flip is in the works. Same with the others (Which are #5-7 12+, WJZZ is #11).

They have recieved a "delisting" letter from Nasdaq, so I smell privatization in the company's future. For now, it will join Citadel and the others in the same post-subprime mortgage crisis boat.

If they actually played smooth jazz they might have listeners.

Would they be the listeners that advertisers are willing to pay for

Not quite. Sonya Hamm was Praise's 3rd morning show host. Larry Young came on 6-10 AM when the station debuted in Fall 2001. There were no middays and I hosted Caravan of Love 3-7pm. Then Melissa Summers spent about a year there after Larry was let go.
When Larry was let go I filled in for that time slot until Melissa and the late great Connie Flint were hired around late October 2002.

When Melissa left I again filled in until Sonya came aboard, although I cannot recall exactly when that was. Once Sonia came on they moved me permantly to Middays and when Connie passed on I took over her Praise Party and it became the Faith Drive with Michael Mitchell.

I am deeply saddened to hear about this latest slashing but where one door closes another one is about to open!
