Two more reasons to Turn Away from 10:
1. They are busy promoting their "NBC 10 Weather Plus" meterologists (just like WPRI promotes Tony Petrarca and the Pinpoint Doppler 12..another way WJAR copies WPRI). WJAR has highway billboards with photos of their 5 weather anchors along I-195 West in East Providence (near the Pawtucket Avenue underpass) , I-195 West in Fall River (near the Government Center tunnel and exits 6 & 7), and I-95 North in Providence (across from The Big Blue Bug). These billboards are supposed to feature digital readouts of the current time, temperature, humidity, and barometer. Guess what? The digital readouts haven't worked for weeks! If you drive through these areas, take notice how the WJAR weather billboards are to show current weather conditions...and they don't! One reason to Turn Away From 10.
2. Last night, there was a fire in Woonsocket, RI that displaced several people from a three-story apartment building. WJAR is supposed to be the "leading news station" in the market. WPRI has set the precedent for "breaking news" when they started up the "Eyewitness News" brand again. Yes, it's a typical fire story (some people may argue house fires are not news)...however, WJAR is trying their best to beat WPRI with "breaking news" such as this. WPRI's crew was FIRST on the air during their 10:00 Fox 64 newscast with the story of the displaced residents...with video of flames and smoke, interviews with displaced residents and the whole nine yards. When the 11:00 hour hit, the fire story was FIRST on WPRI's 11:00 newscast...once again, with a complete report and interviews with displaced residents. The same story was WLNE's second story in their first segment of news...a 20-second VO of the fire. WJAR's first story last night was a report that WPRI did two weeks ago (the story concerned South Kingstown High School banning students from basketball games after a fight broke out after a game a couple of weeks ago). The Woonsocket fire story finally got on WJAR's airwaves after 11:20 p.m. Both WLNE and WJAR were at the scene of the fire some time before WPRI's crew got there, but WPRI was FIRST on the air with the story! WJAR laid a huge egg once again when it comes to "breaking news" stories...instead they led their 11:00 newscast with a story that was almost two weeks old! But yet, WJAR continues to dominate the ratings..and everybody thinks they're so wonderful. I will never comprehend that. I do know the reason why the Woonsocket story didn't make WJAR's air sooner then it actually did...but the point is that WJAR was beaten on breaking news. WPRI has set the precedent for "breaking news" coverage in the market...and WJAR does their damndest to beat WPRI in that category...it was proven again last night that doesn't happen too often.
I am probably going to get criticized for posting this (since the regulars here do know who I work for..and the station doesn't get very good reviews on this board), but I really don't care. When the station I work for succeeds and I'm directly involved in that success, I will gloat about it.
