I noticed last week that WBYN was no longer playing "Contemporary Christian" music (songs in the style of adult contemporary but with Christian lyrics) but instead was playing "praise music", an upbeat, choral style contemporary music replacing hymns in some churches, similar to but "toned down" from Urban Gospel as would be heard on 103.9. Then I noticed there were no longer any local voices on WBYN, even during AM & PM rush hours. The music is coming via. Salem's satellite service "The Word in Praise", with their liners on breaks in the music hours. The local weather & traffic is inserted, all referencing "Life Changing Radio WBYN, 1160 AM and 107-5 Alive". There are fewer local spots. A look at their program schedule shows a lot more syndicated preaching/talk shows. A few years back WBYN was phasing them out in favor of long music blocks during the day and evening.
So basically you have a 24/7 automated religious station, which would make sense for 1160 as a stand alone. Many of the syndicated shows have audio links on the website, so maybe they will encourage 107.5 listeners to listen on the web?
The Rick Musselman job post said they were hiring airstaff. Interesting this was posted on the Philadelphia board first, not here. He certainly is familiar with the valley if he's the same Rick Musselman from years back at WSAN. He also identified it as a "Reading" station. Some people have speculated a simulcast with 97.5 or 107.1, but then why would they hire anyone? It will be interesting to see what happens next, and how soon, and if anything is said on the air or if it's a "surprise" change.
